Good Time To Consider A 720s?
Discussion
Hi,
I've posted this in the general Supercar sections instead of the Mclaren section as I would welcome unbiased input, without the emotional feelings that any human has towards their favourite brands :-)
The Mclaren 720s has been around for quite some time now, and yet it still seems to be holding it's pace very well against a lot of newer supercars. It is also very well priced in the current market.
On the other hand I feel Mclaren in general and the 720s have had their fair share of hiccups in the media, and on numerous forums. They seem to be notorious for breaking down, etc.
I'm aware any car can break and run into trouble, but have Mclaren fixed fixed the majority of flaws with all 720s that have had problems, or are many of the 720s on the market today still prone to significant trouble.
I find it hard to look past them at the moment given that they are very reasonably priced in comparison to other supercars, and the fact that they are still holding their performance extremely well 3 years later.
Appreciate the help and input, thanks.

My 720s is the Aurora blue car up for sale with Alastair Bols.
I've done 11,400 in the car and it has been incredible. Yes it has had a number of niggly issues which required trips to the dealer but they mainly consisted of cracks in the gorilla glass and software glitches.
Now all of these issues have been resolved the car works faultlessly (or as it always should have of course). Its a shame the reputation of the 720s has been affected in this way but like the car, will actually improve over time now
Anyway, to answer your question, it's a very good time to get into a 720s. The issues have all been resolved, the niggles are fixed and the price is halved!

Fabulous car, but as it has much higher mileage, is a 2017 car (so less factory warranty) and has a much lower specification than the car just sold on Collecting Cars, the asking price is now clearly not reflecting the current market price - the owner of that CC car accepted £124,500. Nobody has any idea what the market value is now and won't for a while.

The market value is (give or take due to visibility) what the CC car traded at. We do know the market value now, what we don’t know is how that’ll change.
We know the Market value of one specific car at one specific point in time, how that impacts market value of other cars at other points in time is tbc - good indicator, but it is not like all cars now should trade at 124.5k plus buyers premium - some should probably be below and some above etc SLH_777 said:

Only the seller of the CC 720S knows the reasons for selling through the auction site. It could have been a distressed sale. Edited by SLH_777 on Friday 1st May 10:03

The AB car is a good price. It comes from a reputable dealer and comes with a warranty until October 2022 (big bonus). Because it is being bought from a business, a buyer would also have the added benefit of the CRA 2015 if the car is a lemon and issues are not able to be resolved. You don’t get that through a private sale auction.

My car has 2 year extended McLaren warranty included until November 2022 plus new tyres and fresh ppf.The mileage is reflected in the fact that it is currently the cheapest car advertised on Autotrader.

And it isn't high mileage - it is barely 4K miles PA. I put 10K on a 720S in less than a year. Why are people so hung up on the mileage. These cars and engines can soak up the mileage. The mileage is reflected in the fact that it is currently the cheapest car advertised on Autotrader.

In this current climate you have to be a motivated seller and the price needs to reflect this.
Do you not think there's a chance a lot of owners are going to become motivated as the economy crashes around them though? In this current climate you have to be a motivated seller and the price needs to reflect this.
Maybe he would rather get £125k for it now than £100k in 6 months?

That applies in all circumstances, no two cars are the same but that’s a solid benchmark which reflects almost perfectly where buyers are. If buyers were paying more, it would have sold for a higher price. And these will continue to tumble. The weight of sentiment alone will make that happen.

£100k in 3 months not 6 IMHO
If that happens the 570S will be £60k and bloody hell what a bargain that would be
Which is exactly where I said they would beIf that happens the 570S will be £60k and bloody hell what a bargain that would be
As I said before I think 12c will drop to around 40-45, 570s and 650s around 60 and 720 around 100-120 spider versions add 10k

Or...if you don't need to, enjoy what you have and stop stting your pants.
People either seem to forget or were not around when you used to lose hand over fist with exotics...apart from the last 7 years or so, it was called 'normal'.
As tasteless as this sounds, lots of people will still be making lots of money after this; life will go on and these cars shall still get bought, albeit at a lower price for the foreseeable.
It is, however, very unfortunate if you 'have' to sell just now.
Why do people think that one distressed seller (Collecting Cars 720S) sets a market price? There are GT3's for sale now in the £40's but no-one is claiming that is now the market price. There is no market price at the moment and only a distressed seller with no option will sell a 720's at that price so don't expect too many of them as I suspect most owners will hang on to them.
Is now the right time? All I can say is the longer you wait for "the right time" the less time you will have to enjoy it. Enjoyment costs money, keep waiting and not enjoying a 720s and not making memories. Some things money can't buy but if you can afford to buy the car you want then do so and enjoy it and most importantly USE it as the more you use it the less it costs.
