Merc AMG GT - thoughts/ownership experiences?
Discussion
Apologies if not quite the right forum but the Merc one is fairly quiet on these cars.
I'm looking to buy an AMG GT coupe, 16/17 plate budget 60-70k. They are new to me and I have some simple questions;
GT vs GTS - what's the difference?
What are the must have options/colours on them?
Reliability and ownership costs (I come from TVR then RS6 so used to not quite cheap)
Garaging - we have a double garage with 2 single doors 2150mm wide, will it go in?
Usability as a daily
Anything to avoid on them?
Thanks in advance

I loved the look of them when they came out ,went to test drive one and to be frank it was horrible ,the salesperson actually agreed and said there must be a fault .
Mercedes then sent me a new car to try for a week ,I honestly just didn’t gel at all with it ,it’s very wide and I did not like the feeling you are looking through a letterbox ,the lag when the gearbox was in its lazy setting was remarkable ,it disappears though in sportier settings ,and the ride was horrific and I don’t mind a firm ride but I found it uncomfortable .
I’m sure plenty of posters will think otherwise but I think there are much better cars to put your money into .
I still love the looks though .

That's disappointing to hear, I was just last night looking through the ads as I am considering exchanging my daily 911 for something different and I too think they look the nuts. Was it an early one that you tested, have they improved? I'm thinking the convertible for the summer and a roof down Euro tour with friends. Need to go and try one but does anyone else have experience with them?

Very similar to an SLS both in seating position and ride. I'm amazed those fetch so much money these days, they couldn't give them away for £90k when they were a year old.Mercedes then sent me a new car to try for a week ,I honestly just didn’t gel at all with it ,it’s very wide and I did not like the feeling you are looking through a letterbox ,the lag when the gearbox was in its lazy setting was remarkable ,it disappears though in sportier settings ,and the ride was horrific and I don’t mind a firm ride but I found it uncomfortable .

Thanks all, some mixed thoughts then. It's always great for me to hear from owners rather than just online reviews.
The car I'm interested in is this one which is a GTS rather than standard GT if that makes any difference?

This has the seemingly important premium pack, any thoughts on price and rest of the spec? Or the dealer in fact.

Not first hand experience but...my brother went to buy one last summer. He’s had 2 Astons, Ferrari, multiple Porsche’s etc but told me it was one of his most disappointing moments in a car. Looks fabulous but to drive, boring.
He bought a 911 a day later.
Definitely spend time in one and id suggest looking at a late Gen 1 R8 V10. Mega value for what they are.
Enjoy the hunt

Hi,
My wife bought a GT S in the metallic gre, I thought it looked great and had real presence on the room - can definitely see it being a timeless classic.
The engine noise was amazing - has the same engine as my DB11 but sounded angrier.
However.... the ride was feckin awful, almost comically bad. It went back to the garage twice to see whether they could do anything about it, they managed to make the ride worse and didn’t get rid of the rattles just moved them...
In hindsight we only got a 5 minute test drive in bad traffic and should have insisted on a longer run, schoolboy error.
I thought it had character and always felt like it wanted to get going - we just couldn’t live with the ride and ended up successfully rejecting it after a bit of back and forth. I was hoping it was just a problem with that car as did like it apart from the ride.
Thanks,
Mark

Thank you all so far, mark especially. The ride is a comment a few people have made but then I've heard others say it's ok. Rattles though would be a major offput as they'd just annoy me.
Need to test drive the car I'm looking at and go from there I think.
I'm not really a Porsche man so a 991 is out and I love the r8 but the gen 2 is only just in budget and my wife isn't a massive fan.
Aston I feel are a little to special and delicate for what will be a daily.
Mustang, cheapest by far and would be brand me but really doesn't feel special inside and would depreciate like a stone.

John holland are a good dealer. I am motor trade myself and wouldn't hesitate to buy from them. I loosely know one of their buyers and he is really, really picky with a good eye for detail. One of the good guys. The car I'm interested in is this one which is a GTS rather than standard GT if that makes any difference?

I really like them visually and the interior is lovely. Test drove a GTS last year when I bought a family car (wasn’t looking to buy it just wanted to try it). As far as ride goes it is firm, however on a smooth road it’s fine so depends what your trips are like. No real lag in sport mode. Engine is epic..
I really liked it and one I am watching as an alternative to an R8 or 12C in the mid term.
For what it’s worth the dealer (who just sells high end cars) really rated it and was his choice as his daily drive from his stock. The link to the other thread also makes no real mention of ride from a quick scan also.
Ultimately, as they always say, I think you need to drive it yourself (proper test drive) and see how you gel.
Let us know how you get on....

Oh well, in for a penny and all that. Deposit paid on the one at John Holland. Subject to the car being perfect on viewing it is now off sale
So looking forward to it, would love a proper supercar but this will be a daily driver. Not a Porsche fan so 911 was out and the gen 2 r8 was just outside of budget.
Driven the jag but it's just way too shouty and depreciation is glacial on them.

That is the spirit! I came via two 911's, both 991.2, one a T and one a GTS.
I bought a 2019 GTS and I love it, but we are all different and maybe I just needed a different experience.
I love the interior, the boot space and the noise. Plus it is very quick.
I hope you enjoy it. Make sure you set up the individual button, it is great.

I think you mean stratospheric, there hasn't been a Jag in history with glacial depreciation other than a competition E Type!Great choice of car, I really like the AMG and they are extremely well made.

I thought I'd already put in my two-penneth worth, but perhaps not...
I bought a GTR (I appreciate its not exactly the same) about 6mths ago, it was just under a year old. It's a beautiful thing to look at and the noise is thunderous - I mean, there are getting on for 600 little devils in the engine with hammers all banging away to make the sound of God's wrath...have I gone too far? Anyway, its a great noise!
My only disappointments are that it is a bit of handful and you do have to ease the power on somewhat. And the dealerships / service centres for Mercedes remain appalling, inline with all previous experiences. Mine had a fault which took around 8 weeks to resolve - it turned out to be a faulty battery cable. But to return the car on multiple occasions not having checked it, and it failing immediately was just not acceptable. Added to this, the ability to actually answer a phone or return an email is beyond the capabilities of any Mercedes service desk it would seem. It took the intervention of HQ to get any response. To add to that, they damaged my cars bodywork, admitted it (in writing) and then refused to correct or pay for the damage. They of course did with the threat of legal action, but it's ridiculous that one should have to get to that point.
Anyway, the car is beautiful and has so much power, and makes a wonderful noise - and its comfortable enough. There's no disappointment on my side from it (it's even moderately practical, in that you can go away for a few nights in it without too much aggro).

Thank you for that. My last car was an Audi and my wife has owned an evoque since 2014 so between us we ate well used to appalling dealer service, in the case of land rover the word service doesn't even exist.
