Huracan (EVO) STO is happening...
Discussion
Just got word from my dealer who said the Huracan STO has been given the green light. Dealers were informed about the car at the annual dealer meeting. Here's what I was told about the car which will most likely be shown during Monterey car week at the Quail motoring show.
-The car will be named the STO (Super Trofeo Omologato)
-Will be a 2021 MY car.
-Limited production, right now the rumour is 700 cars but dealers are pushing it to be lower and numbered.
-Dealers with race teams will get priority for allocations. I was also told Lamborghini now has an internal grading system for customers so dealers will have to provide names of customers who are interested and the factory will have the final say.
-The car will look like the Super Treofeo race car,. It'll be the same HP as the EVO but will shed weight, around 150kg is the target.
-It might have some race tech like the brakes but nothing confirmed yet.
-It's already been tested at various race circuits, a VVIP customer I spoke with claims he talk to one of the test drivers for Lamborghini and he said the car is insane.
This could also be the last NA V10 and might be the Lamborghini to own if you can get allocation. Very excited to hear more about this car.

Not exactly a great sign that dealers don’t think they can sell 700 cars are whatever the price is
Sounds like a cool car though, although why wouldn’t you just buy the track version as that will perform better on track (which is where the car will come into its own) anyway and will be probably be cheaper (and safer in case you do crash) - in today’s environment it all seems a little pointless from a driving point of view ....

I don’t think it’s because the dealers don’t think they can sell 700 cars I think they want to make it more exclusive for once, 700 is too many and they already screwed a loyal customer base with the number or Perfs they have made. the "story" i heard from the dealr i worked with is that this car was originally designed for Squadra Corse customers exclusively. The idea of the car has been approved but the spec and marketing strategy have not been fixed yet. Apparently, the engine at the moment stays same, i.e. same as Perfs and EVO. it is more about handling and weight reduction, racing clutch, RWD with mechanical differential etc. Dealers with racing customers obviously push for exclusivity and dealers without want to be able to sell it to their VVVIP clients. that's all i heard.
if above mentioned is true, i.e. 700 units per year, this cannot be called limited edition. Just look at SVJ, ok slightly higher producition number but you get my point, SVJ already trades below cost within less than a year despite "limited production". Production number does not matter - what really matters is the number of the car being produced vs the number of people who are willing to buy this car. Each brand is positioned differently. I will just stop here. fwiw, i own Perf and i love Lambo but cannot agree with their limited production number being 700 or 900. I think 200 is a good number for lambo brand imho.

Totally forgot that it will be RWD. The factory is switching over to the EVO RWD soon and I was told that will be their focus next year hence why they're aiming for MY21 for the STO.
The feeling I get is HQ wants 700 cars because they can probably sell all 700 but dealers want limited becase the SVJ was a complete sh!t show. A year prior to the SVJ been released dealers were telling customers the SVJ would be around 800 total, coupe and roadster but that wasn't true. And the fact dealers, not just in the UK, are low balling customers who want to sell or trade their "limited" SVJ's is another big F you so it makes sense why dealers are pushing for a ultra limited car to please VVIP's.
I do have my name on list, i'm 2nd on my dealer list but I'll only commit if it's actually limited and if it actually looks like the race car. It would be nice to buy a modern Lamborghini that doesn't plummet in value.

I suspect in the near future all cars will - relatively speaking - plummet in value again (probably with the exception of Ferrari halo cars ala LaF successor). It was that way in the past and will likely be the case again in the future - many more customers than in the past, but also many many more cars to choose from and the cheap money tap will eventually be closed. Pre-2012 has there ever been a Lamborghini that held its value? Didn’t they not even manage to sell all the Murcielago SVs they wanted to build at the time (or to take Porsche as an example, they didn’t even manage to sell the full production run of Carrera GTs I think)
Honestly, don't you think the customer base is just 'special edition'd out now? Not that I'm in the market for anything new (apart from one) as I'm looking to keep my drivers license. But all the performance car brands are at it and reading this I just think 'so what?'. It's also true that 700 is in no way a limited run, so I suspect anyone looking to maintain or increase their purchase price will be disappointed.
And once out of warranty after these cars are 3 yrs old and running costs come into play plus normal depreciation - like my older cars... Those that are not true petrol heads will run for the hills. Its been cheap to own some of the newish metal and free or profit for limited run cars... It cant last forever
Latest info or I guess rumour is it could be number limited, maybe around 400 cars but what I was told was no decision has officially been made regarding production numbers.
Silver lining for Performante owners is the EVO most likely won't have a Perfomante variant, the STO will essentially be the EVO Perf but at a higher price point & RWD.

I still think people and manufacturers are barking up the wrong tree with regards to these 'track focused special editions'. At the end of the day, they are all still road cars and limited by road tyres. These cars are increasingly becoming computerised downforce monsters that are good at producing admittedly tremendous performance over a grand total of.....2-3 laps before the tyres give up the ghost. And literally every manufacturer is chasing that same supposedly performance trackday market by coming up with loads of these cars when let's face it the bulk of buyers are motivated mainly by buying the newest/latest/shiniest/supposedly fastest thing that due to the so called 'limited edition' tag they think won't cost them money to own. As 456mgt says, when everyone and his dog now has some funky 'limited/special edition' job the USP of such a car is vastly reduced.
Smaller, lighter (much lighter) and simpler is surely a much better USP to push now. I just wish someone (and VAG/Porsche I really am looking at you given the parts bin to do so already exists in large part) takes the chance to make such a car that's focused to be enjoyable to drive at road speeds rather than one that laps the ring at sub 6 minutes or whatever. I'll get off my now though.

My apologies for taking this off-topic, somewhat, but wanted to share what I think is a bit of a revelation. It's this car, a ListerBell Stratos replica.
Funky design, stripped out and genuine go-kart handing. It's also small and incredibly visceral, which means perfect for B roads and you're having a blast without having to fracture the odd speed limit. Everyone who's had a ride or driven it comes away eulogising about it. Honestly, I'm blown away, and it's my new yardstick for anything hardcore, Evo STO included.

Completely agree with you. Utterly and totally bored now. The manufacturers have been saturating this market for years and they are still doing it. They are just not special, some internet whispers and a few reveals do not make a special car any more and the manufacturers have well and truly got themselves to blame for that. For many enthusiasts now, custom built and truly one off or limited cars is a thing.

That is a lovely looking car. I think there is a thread on one in general gassing Funky design, stripped out and genuine go-kart handing. These are truly limited numbers!! like c.20 over 3 years.
I can see what people are saying about all manufacturers playing the “special edition” game but I really like the LT and 458sp before, and have to say I will be tempted by this lambo.

So right! I had my name down for an SVJ when it was 899 (I think) in total according to the dealer, and had a coupe assured (have a Huracan today). Earlier this year I cancelled it because it had gone to being 899 coupe and 899 roadster - and a number sat around not being sold. It wasn't that I was going to flip it, but I did feel a bit conned - not by the dealer I should add - that the number of cars had doubled and the exclusivity (which was part of the attraction for sure) had just evaporated. If I'd opted to sell it a couple of years down the line - which was a real possibility - I feared taking a really heavy haircut on the value. Seeing what happened with the Performante has only reinforced this and it does grate somewhat how the 'limited, but not that limited, runs' of cars do appear today.
