It depends what you are looking for from the car. IMO the DBS SL is a GT car, a very good and handsome GT car but it feels it’s weight and the gearbox is too slow, when you start to push on a little and want it to be a sports car. I drove one back to back not with an F12 but an 812 and they are cars on different planets. Whilst the F12 is older, the comparison is similar - the engine and drivetrain responsiveness in the Ferraris are much more sporting in character, and the chassis more responsive when you push it. IMO.
OP, if you are in Italy, there is only one answer - F12. Sure, the DBS will probably be a rarer sight but I would suggest that dealer support will be more of an issue than for the F12. In addition, if you drive a Ferrari in Italy, you are a hero. It’s as simple as that. I’ve had pump attendants wrestle the fuel nozzle out of my hand and insist on fuelling my car for me. The love is that strong.
Regarding the cars themselves, I only have experience of the pre SL DBS but I cant imagine that Aston has moved the game on that far as it would have to be a massive leap for them to have trumped the F12...

Agree that being in Italy, a Ferrari appears to make more sense.
I've just picked up a DBS Superleggera (on loan) today however, and its really very good. I'd say the Ferrari is not really a competitor, as the Aston is more a relaxed but v fast luxury type of GT car rather than a more "lively" sports car type of GT.
Think a bit more towards the Bentley end of the spectrum, but still closer to the Ferrari than the Bentley.
