Cat 5/S5 Tracker installer
Discussion
Hi
I have recently got a new car (Ferrari) and one of the pre-requisite for insurance cover is a Cat5 or S5 tracker being installed and subscription is on.
The car already has an old Cat 5 installed however when I called to activate was advised it would be £300 per year. Was told that this was because it was an old model and if I wanted to reduce the cost I would have to install a new tracker which has a cheap subscription. As I hate the notion of regular subscription, I have looked for one off payment style as I intend the keep the car for at least 3-4 years. Hence I have come across tracker called SmarTrack s% which supplied, fit and lifetime of ownership is about £1k i.e. equivalent to old 3 year cost with the added advantage of being able to use on mobile device.
So questions are
1. thoughts on the tracker or suggestions of others
2. other trackers that offer lifetime style tracker
3. recommended installer in the East London / Essex catchment area with older style ferrari i.e. 2007
Thanks

Just a quick update.
For insurance purposes I needed a Cat 5/S5 tracker and as I intend to keep the car for at least 4-5 years I went for Smartrack S5 tracker.
Reason was installation was £500 and lifetime sub was £499 vs £300 per year for Navtrak vs Metatrak (£700 including 3 year sub but another £400 for 3 years at renewal).Hence I went for the overall cheapest cost of ownership i.e. £1k. Obviously if I don't keep the car for 4 years then Metatrak would be the better cost option but rather plan for the worse case scenario.
On a side note, from my research Metatrak seems to have the best app support if you are interested in knowing more about details of the car.

really useful info thanks. I have never upto now had a tracker on any of my cars, but I know when I have inquired with insurance about cover for say a McLaren I have been told a tracker is a pre-requisite so good to see the costs associated with them.
There are different tracker and more confusing the rating has changed recently.I assume for your car you would need the same as mine i.e. the highest thatham rating - Cat5 (old rating) / S5.
Main difference between the two are that I can see is that Cat 5 car can be immobilised remotely by the police while S5 doesn't have the option as standard (I guess can be fitted as an add-on depending on manufacuter). However while that sounded great apparently the immobilisation is rarely used so thought why pay the extra both in equipment and subscription if the insurance doesn't require that feature.
Hope that helps

I've been told the McLaren fitted tracker is £200 a year - no idea if there is a lifetime option. I'm actually trying to sort mine out now - I can't collect the car at the weekend unless that's started.
Can't comment on that but my was a factory fitted Ferrari one but as mine was very old i.e. 12 years, decided to upgrade anyway as then I can use it on an app. As I am basically a cheapskate and broke after buying the car wanted a subscription that was a fire and forget option. One point to note that it is the lifetime of the ownership of the car. So don't pass on to the next person nor if you transfer the tracker to another car.My insurance gave me a 2 week grace period to have it fitted but due to some issues had to go with a hefty premium insurance as it was all last minute.

Where did you get it fitted? Auto electrician or main dealer?

Not sure where you are based but went with Caesar alarm - https://www.caesarcaralarms.co.uk/. Paul is based in Kent but travelled to me in the East London / Essex border and fitted to my Ferrari 612.G
Went with him as found his name crop up a few times on the forum plus he was able to fit me into a time slot that was suitable. Also very approachable and helpful

This is what McLaren fit as standard > https://automotive.vodafone.co.uk/stolen-vehicle-t...It's what I have on the 720S. Eventhough they advertise an app, there isn't an app for McLaren. The insurance company should give you a period of grace to register the tracker to your name. To liven up and register the tracker to your name, call the customer service number on: 0333 222 0003. They need you to call them when sat in the car with both tracker key fobs. The key fobs have buttons on them. Once they are setup, they will email you a certificate, which you then send to the insurance company.

It seems Admiral will not give a grace period - so I need to get it activated before the weekend.
However, much to my surprise - they don't insist on tracker, and not having it only increases the premium by £156, which is cheaper than the annual subscription.
I'd prefer to have it so want the forms sent to tracker today (I filled them in when I paid a deposit) but haven't been able to talk to the dealer yet. But if it doesn't all get sorted by the weekend I'll simply insure without it.
As for MOC - I haven't decided on that yet. I'm not on FB and I'm not sure I'll join just for that, even with a fake ID. But we'll see.

That is interesting as beeng looking for something like this for myself but I will attach on a separate house key ring rather than car, as for me, if I did that I would have issue with my insurance if something was to happen. If you decide to join the McLaren Owners Club UK, you will be sent one as a welcome present.

The holder is designed so that the tracker fob can be easily slipped out for separate storage when away from the vehicle. When I bought the 720, I was given a little McLaren pouch to put the tracker fob into, but it's just another thing to carry around with the keys and possibly lose. The holder is a much better solution IMO. davek_964 said:

They are worth having and they do work. In the early days, I forgot the fob and drove off. Within seconds I received a text alert and a phone call from the monitoring centre. However, much to my surprise - they don't insist on tracker, and not having it only increases the premium by £156, which is cheaper than the annual subscription.

Yes, I had it on my 996 turbo. I got a similar call - despite warning them in advance that I was selling the vehicle and it would be driven away on a flatbed!Gassing Station | Supercar General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
