Just made another crossing on Ferry to hoek van Holland, and parked again in the larger cars section, trying to avoid dings on the F12 triple layer. This time some lowlife put a 1.5 cm light key scratch mark on roof near door. Be warned maybe safety in numbers on that fairly gross ferry. Or 100 ppf needed. 185 mph on Autobahn fantastic fun though, highly recommended.

Sorry to hear, although it may have not been deliberate.

I wince every time I'm on the ferry and see people rushing back to their cars, especially on an overnight crossing. Lifting bags and trolley suitcases over cars to get through, squeezing past each other as 90% appear to get lost and can't find their cars....

Shame it happened. Had my Merc dinged on the I.O.W. ferry while I was sitting in it, by a woman banging open the passenger door of another Merc alongside. Protested, but woman said it was my fault for parking too close. Given they arrived after me, it was clear she had the mental range of a windscreen wiper, and was possibly violent.

Week after that, the same ferry caught fire slightly again, so we were evicted onto the quayside at Lymington so we could watch our cars being incinerated in complete safety.

EuroTunnel is mostly strife free, though there's always the dingbat who needs to squeeze between the nose-to-tail parked cars, despite the warning notices not to. There's also the 'I don't use the handbrake, me' crowd, who just shove the gear lever into park. Car then surges back and forth for a bit until I summon Le Attendante and point out the nefarious delinquent. :-)

Refuse to use car ferries now. Like the other poster, have watched families dragging roller cases alongside parked cars, dragging pushchairs over car bonnets, etc.

I have used Dover to Calais numerous times and have similar concerns.

I tend to hover around the car until everyone in the nearby vehicles are either out of their cars or off the deck. Not ideal if you want some breakfast, but I'd rather make people silently aware that I expect them not to bang their doors against mine.

I do the reverse on the way back and also offer to assist an adjacent car owner with holding the door for them 'to make it easier for them to get back in'.

I'm happier with the tunnel but also don't trust everyone with the small gaps that the loaders get you to leave between the cars

Think so. Have done most of the ferry routes to Europe, had some really bad winter trips, including Storm Force 10 back from Santander. Ferry glass interior was smashed to bits, cars slithering about on the car deck. I took a bike, lashed it to the railings with my own ratchet straps, so no damage. Awful carnage for the vehicle drivers though.

Haven't seen any major to-fro slithering on the Tunnel crossings recently, attendant now bangs on the window and checks you're in first/park with the funny handbrake-thing on.

Main hazard seems to be scraping the rims on the sticky-out bits, and giddy children of all ages barging past the door mirrors.

My car always seems to get pulled for a 'substances' wipe-down at the Tunnel. Haven't missed a train because of it though.

Great info. Scratch small enough to 95 pc polish out but still the fkg ferry is a liability for nice cars. Probably best strategy to board last and stay at the back. Takes 1.5 hrs to get to autobahn paradise from Holland though 😀
