Time for a change
Discussion
I've finally decided that it's time to have a change around in my garage and that it's time to sell my 964 Cab that I've had for almost 19 years. I rarely drive it anymore (sub-500 miles a year) and find that I when I do drive it, I am yearning after newer cars and not the classics (I have a 991.1 GTS as a daily). So it's off to the garage for a service and MOT and then I'm going to SOR it to see what happens.
As such, I need to think about the short list of things to look at to replace it (which is where you guys come in !). At the moment, I've got these on my list of things to look at:
981 Spyder
991.1 GT3
997.1 or .2 GT3
Mclaren 650s
I'm primarily a Porsche guy, but is there anything else worth considering either Porsche or non-Porsche ?
Cheers,
Richard

GT4?
Different character to the 981 Spyder and yet similar in many ways.
The Spyder is more usable and more fun but clearly the GT4 can be used on track. There is little difference between the cars for road use imo. The Spyder has some fake noise in Sport plus mode which is a bit irritating.
991. GT3 great car but surpassed by the gen 2 largely because of the fantastic 4.0 engine which may well be one of the last great sounding pre filter and regs Porsche flat sixes going off the current line up of engines. And if you want 'manuel' it will have to be the gen 2 although these cars are alot rarer than the PDKs.
Spec is all on these cars.
Not going to comment on the 997 as I like the newer stuff and would prefer a GT4 to an older 997 GT3 even though the GT4 is far from perfect as a package it is nonetheless a great road car at the money but is ultimately let down by it's strangled non GT Carrera engine.
Little experience with Mclarens although I am getting a lightly used 570S soon to experience the brand. Any used one especially a relatively old 650S would have to be seriously cheap having regard to the colossal discounts widely available on new and nearly new stuff together with the relatively large supply and number of forthcoming new models to the market which will further impact on falling prices.

I did think about a GT4, but as I don't do track days (although I have my first one booked for mid-June), thought the Spyder would be better for the type of fast road driving I do when out for a blat. Different character to the 981 Spyder and yet similar in many ways.

Be interested to hear how you get on with the 570S, as one of those is on the periphery of the short-list. Don't really want to get into a downward spiral about the earlier car's possible reliability and depreciation issues, as I think they are all spectacular cars and am impressed by what this young sports car manufacturer has managed to achieve in a few short years. From what I understand, the 650S is regarded much more highly in the dealer network than the 12C, as most of the issues were ironed out in that model. Having said that, the design language of the newer models is very eye catching.
Did think of a Gallardo, have driven one in the past and really enjoyed it, but it's a generation too old for me.
987 Spyder is also a consideration, although fear it may fall into the same camp as the Gallardo. There are a couple of 570's that are being marketed at just under £100k, so, given Mclaren's usual opportunity for a deal, they could probably be picked up for closer to £90k. I'm going to start shopping properly later in the summer, so will keep an eye on that market to see what happens.

You're more likely going to get only around £2-3k off those McLaren prices, I'd be surprised if they give up to £10k away.
That's true, but if you don't ask, you don't get Anyway, as I'm unlikely to be shopping until late summer, I'll just keep an eye on the prices for the moment.
