Afternoon all , looking to buy an older R8V8.

Anyone know anything about the silver one at HR Owen Cheltenham or the Daytona one at Brookspeed?
Thanks in advance

That Dayona one is stunning. The carbon fibre engine bay and side blades are essential IMO.
THe silver with the carbon blades is a classic combo too with a lot of carbon & extra leather inside

Both look gorgeous. I bought one for £34k privately and ended up spending a lot getting it right if I had my time again I would buy one like the ones you linked to for more cash.

I would spend some money getting it properly inspected there are really 3 areas that are incredibly expensive to sort if they aren't right - magnetic ride dampers - honestly I am glad my car hasn't got them they are over £1k per corner and not good quality they fail a lot. The air con compressor is £2k to swap if it fails or £3.5k if you take it to Audi who will remove the engine to do the job(!) but that is noisy if it is going however take time to check air con is working. And the biggie which is very rare but the front sub frame can crack if the car has had some impact like a huge pothole or accident repair. To inspect it takes 90 mins or so, you have to pop off the wiper arms, remove the 4 pieces of trim in the front trunk, take the front trunk out, just to inspect it. Might as well fit a new battery whilst all that is off save you the hassle of doing it all again.

The stock exhaust is too quiet. The stock head unit is diabolical. I just spent a week swapping mine out completely, new head unit, amp, speakers, subs. Much better. But these 2 items are optional. I also put Michelin PS4S tyres on & they are sensational!

Fantastic cars can't get enough of mine.

Expect some Astra driving fool to post on here in a min that it isn't a supercar

Extremely rare. As in seen details of one car.

Not sure of any specialists other than Ricky at RE performance . RAC saved one of the fb group guys from buying a shed with their inspection but I bet it didn't include frame checking.
Get the best car you can afford with the highest spec and lowest miles plus full main dealer history.

Sub-frame cracking issue is extremely rare and the internet IMHO creates a false picture. I understand Ricky has seen this three times in the UK and all three cars were involved in an accident. Personally it's not something I worry about.

RAC do R8 inspections - very detailed, national coverage, around £500 for a full report. Other independents will do one for £200ish but likely to be verbal only and coverage will only be in their local area.

Bear in mind Ricky worked for Audi on launching the platform in the UK too
I would get it checked when you buy the car and then not worry about it again
That being said if the car is in the workshop for a new battery which involves all the labour of stripping the front end off, I would pay the extra £150 to get the frame reinforcement plates added that featured on the later cars. Why not.

There is a guy on YT 'VolksWizard' who shows the step by step process for checking the front subframe for cracks. This might be useful if you plan on asking a inspection guy to do it.

Thanks all .

I’m going to ask Ricky if he can do an inspection on the one I opt for after looking at them and asking all the qs outside of the subframe .

Anymore info always appreciated

Alloy corrosion under the paint. Bare metal respray needed to sort the bonnet I believe. Earlier cars apparently.

Audi offered me 70% goodwill but want to do it by fitting a new bonnet. Will still cost me £900! Not sure whether to do it or not it is honestly barely noticeable with bonnet open. Thoughts?

In all honesty though these are rare minor niggles, loads of R8 around pushing 80k miles now with no major troubles if looked after. Very well engineered cars, and stunning to look at. If you are spending upto £50k you might get a nice V10 now, if not a fabulous V8. I'd just be wary of the bottom end of the market. One I looked at at a dealers at £42k had accident damage and another similar priced had been serviced at a back street garage on 2 occasions for 150 quid a pop

Bonnets are £2.4k list price I believe from Audi inc vat and a good paintshop might want £500 to sort it anything like right. Tempting to see if you can do something with Audi as you know the colour will be right etc. If you are keeping car and money is an issue there's no reason a good body shop can't sort it out but I'd be tempted at 900 quid if that's all in?

If its not that bad /noticeable I'd also think about how much mileage you do and stonechip factor. Nowt worse than fresh new paint and motorway stonechips etc. Cars- what a bugger lol. I'm looking at 550 quid to get a door and sills painted right on my Alfa.

The bonnet has approx 5 stone chips per square inch at the moment. I have never known anything like it. Must be the shape and position low down

Yes they are very prone. I'd be tempted to live with it till the bonnet needs paint then get a bare metal spray of it plus the front bumper at the same time.

All thanks again .
I’ve had a good read of R8talk - quite American dominated and RS246 totally dead for R8.
I was fortunate enough to have a v10 Spyder until July last year ... my advice sell in haste repent at leisure !!
Anyway more advice , the silver one has full
Audi history so I’m assuming carries some weight ref mileage and provenance ?
Looks like only 1 damper has been replaced in 2015. I thought they were replaced in diagonal pairs ?
Air con nothing replaced - if you’ve got this far is it a case of it will go soon or might it not go at all?
Comes with a 12 month warranty from a reputable dealer so hoping half decent
Cheers again all

When you do have the bonnet resprayed (or replaced) have it PPF’ed. The relatively thin stuff works on the bluff bumper, but slightly heavier film is better on the bonnet. Otherwise I’ve found that the thinner stuff tears when larger chippings hit it.

Dampers are best replaced in axle pairs but if being done under warranty then they will usually only replace faulty units. Mag ride dampers are a ticking bomb and will fail at some point.
Suggest you carefully examine the remaining three for leaks/weeping. Ricky told me he has never had to change a V10 A/C compressor, but the condensers corrode and the control units have been known to fail.
