Hi,

I'm hoping to buy my first supercar early next year.

I hope to buy a 1-2 year old car.

I cannot make my mind up between a 488 or Huracan.

Any advice or steer on why you would choose one over the other?

Thanks in advance for your help.

488 is a much better car but if its your first I'd maybe go for something less powerful but more rewarding in other ways ie visceral like a 458. Huracan a bit meh and Audi.

Sorry didn't mean it like that. Good mate has had a 800bhp 997 turbo for 7 years. He still chose a 458 to replace it over 488 as he felt it was better full stop. Of the two you mention I'd take the 488. Its an F car cloud9

488 easily, between those two. But have a test drive, and also drive a 650S. Then decide for yourself.

Huracan is a fantastic car even in standard format, the 488 is a very good car but a little boring in my opinion. The transmission and V10 normally aspirated engine in the Lambo is an absolute master piece and on the road in the real world there’s nothing out there much quicker.
As a previous owner of 5 consecutive Ferrari’s in a row I won’t be rushing back anytime soon, that said I might get a 458 alongside the Lambo one day.

I have never driven one but I would look very carefully at a Huracan Performante. I have a 458 and if I was changing that is one of the few cars I would look at. Those cars do not include the 488 by the way, which I have driven extensively including at Fiorano on one of the Pilota courses - a much better track car than the 458 but missing that last 1000 rpm and the n/a sound. The 458 is already not one of the best sounding F cars (the F430 is better in my opinion anyway) and the addition of turbo power and subtraction of 1000 rpm is not an overall plus just in sound terms.

Both very good cars, for me the Huracan is a better choice than the 488, in 'real' world driving the 488 would (at least with me at the wheel) not see which way the Lambo had gone.

Thanks all.

So i've called both Ferrari and Lamborghini this week... just to add to mix of decisions:

488 - stopped production (taking orders) with a replacement being announced in March 2019 (Geneva Motor Show)

Huracan - stopped production (taking orders) with a face lift being announced in March 2019 (Geneva Motor Show)... the facelift model will be called the Huracan Evo and they told me it is basically the Perfomante with the wing, and will have 640BHP

I thought you wanted a second hand vehicle?

If that’s the case, drive a 488 and a Performante, they’re totally different vehicles in the way they deliver their performance imo. Then your choice will be much easier, have fun!

Really... you don't know whether you want to buy a Ferrari or a Lamborghini ?

Maybe you are better asking yourself which car you prefer rather than seeking the preferences of randoms off the internet before spending circa £200k on a supercar. Buy with passion, buy the one that makes your knees wobble, buy the one you dream about, or you'll just end up buying the wrong one.

Thanks...

Both cars make my knees wobble... I dream about both of them... is there a wrong one :-)

My general opinion is:

- Ferrari 488: always wanted one... arguably a better car... BUT it doesn't sound as good as the Huracan (and i've learned my lesson already moving from a NA Porsche that screams when you drive it, to a Turbo'd Porsche... yes it's faster but it doesn't put the same smile on your face as a NA engine

- Lamborghini Huracan: great looking car (IF the spec'd right), NA, so sounds amazing... BUT it's not a Ferrari

Hence I asked for some help :-)

For me personally if i got a Huracan it would have to be the Performante..The 488 is ultimately faster until it starts raining when the 4WD performante puts its power down better.
To throw a curveball have you considered a nicely specced 720S..Makes both the Italians look old fashioned in comparison and a much lighter car with its rigid carbon tub..
You have a nice problem and one which most people would love to be in the same situation..

Not sure why it’s been mentioned that the 488 is a better can than the Huracan and I doubt the Ferrari would keep up the H in the real world. I’m not sure even on paper the Ferrari i is quickker, certainly around a track it wouldn’t be.
720 is a good call however you need to be brave with horror stories of reliability and dreadful customer service.im sure once all the niggles are sorted they’ll be a good buy that said moving one in the long run could be difficult.

Get the best 458 you can afford , hurracan in standard form can’t touch it and the 488 engine lets it down

Even though I was the one to say the 488 engine sound wasn't great, I think it is a bit unfair to say it is let down by its engine. It's engine is a total masterpiece and streets ahead of 991 Turbo Porsches in terms of character, and it has just stupendous and endless grunt. If buying a 488 I'd get a Spider because either top down or with the little back window down you do get lots more delicious sounds. If you are going to use it on track a lot (not ideal, better to get a track car as well or else be prepared for lots of expensive consumables being consumed - my 458's CCB's needed wallet shocking replacement) then the 488 is a far better choice than the 458. If not, the 458 is plenty fast enough for sane and even insane road use and is overall quite a bit more fun in my totally subjective and no offence to anyone who disagrees, opinion. Also, again just in my view, the 458 is a far prettier car than the 488.

Those are my thoughts if you must have an F car.

The whole is McLaren better thing went on for months and months here and became quite contentious. I think the 720S is just saw your arm off if you woke up next to it ugly. However, it may very well be be a better car.
