Does anyone know how to adjust the handbrake on a Cerbera? My 4.5 has just come back from its 1st MOT, and the handbrake it totally pants.

Strange, as I thought the testing of the handbrake was part of the MOT. I can't stop on any decent incline which can be a problem.

Yeah I know, take it back to the dealer, but its one of those things that constantly needs adjusting, so I thought, why not give it a go.

If I'm not mistaken, the handbrake works a separate drum brake system?

Any info always appreciated.

Me too!

I've a feeling that this is something that we TVR owners are expected to live with - Similar problem with my previous Chimaera.

I know it's a specialist car but doing a safe hill start (in a speed six, where you need to rev it a little to start (hence taking your right foot off the foot brake)is surely not too much to ask.

Mine came back from its MOT saying that they'd `let me off' with the state of the handbrake!

Join the handbrake is useless club!

I never park mine on a hill - It might not be there when I come back!
The garage said its a full strip down labour intensive job - they've checked the obvious but seem to think it's a cable problem not running freely.

The handbook says always park with the wheels pointing into the curb - Sounds like a design problem.

Apparently, the ineffectual handbrake is a recognised 'feature' of most TVRs, in particular the Cerbera.

Until you've got a few miles under your belt, taking your foot off the brake and 'catching' first gear is not easy. But is a better option than balancing the car on the hill which, if the hill is at all steep, smokes the clutch.

The dysfunctional air-con, radio reception etc etc all add to the Cerbera character. Rolling back onto the guy 6-inching you on the approach to a busy junction is less amusing.

Anyone out there 'sorted' their handbrake? (Or know a good source for 'Back Off - my handbrake doesn't work!' bumper stickers).

Stumbled across this thread in an attempt to find out how the adjust the handbrake on my Cerb.

It's lasted the whole of two weeks of ownership before becoming 100% pants!

Can anybody tell me wher the crappy plactic adjuster is?

Cheers,

nick.

I find my handbrake more useful for hanging bags of shopping on to stop them flying around the cabin

yup mine too - first gear is the only way. Even on my driveway (see profile) the handbrake doesn't hold.

Handbrake
whilst the adjuster has backed itself off fully take the oppurtunity to remove the rear wheels and adjust the toothed adjuster inside the rear drum.. there's an inspection / sdjuster hole in the drum that you should move to the "twenty-five to six" position ..(!) then peer through the hole and wind the adjuster until it stops turnning .. then wind it back two clicks or three until the drum spins freely. Then go under the car and put your hand up over the right hand side of the diff somewhere in the area of the diff pinion / propshaft flange area .. there you'll find the handbrake cable and the knurled adjuster for the cable .. tighten until you get the handbrake lever ending up where you want (personal preference, but generally the more you get the lever towards vertical the better you can pull on it) .. then make sure the knurled adjuster has it's two parts locked together to prevent it undoing itself again.

Hope this helps.
Mike

Thanks mlumb, very pleased with how the car polishes up and how well it resists the urge to show dirt.

Nice wheels on yours too!!
