Oil pressure when hot

Noticed on Thursday night (that my car (4.5)when sat in traffic) that the Oil pressure dropped from about 65psi to just over 40psi at idle. The car was reading about 100 c with the fans starting to cut in and out.

When I moved on to freer roads the pressure then jumped back up to 65psi.

Checked the oil level the next day when cold and it was halfway between the max and min mark.

Should the car do this as I have only owned it for a short time and am still trying to work out what's normal.

Thanks alot. Got a bit twitchy as I will be doing a couple of long trips in the next few months (with a couple of litres of Mobil 1 in the boot of course). Didn't fancy having my wife berate me for buying another TVR on the hard shoulder somewhere outside Bordeaux if it all went wrong.
