I have just bought a 4.2 Cerbie and thought it a good idea to check the oil level. To my surprise there was only a little oil on the bottom of the dipstick - No warning lights or anything. Anyway I read the manual and bought 4L of Mobil oil and put about 1L in the engine - this has brought the level between min and max very nicely. The previous owner never checked the oil - he only had the car for 4 months 2000 miles.

Is this anything to worry about? Does anyone know how much oil per mile I should expect to burn.

General oil consumption 1 litre per 1 thousand miles, 2 litres from min to max on dipstick.

You ought to check it every 2 or 3 hundred miles I reckon. The manual says every day though!

That doesn't sound like excessive consumption, but after all the recent debate it's just worth checking: is it dry sump, and if so did you measure the oil level using the corresponding technique?

Cheers,

But the 4.2 isn't a dry sump...
