After Market Warranties
Discussion
Gentlemen.
After reading talk of AJP engines in Cerberas lunching themselves it strikes me that a good value early model might make a great value track/weekend car - given that the engine doesn't go....
Is there any way you could insure against this? i.e. although buying privately get an inspection from a dealer prior to purchase and buy a warranty off 'em - or from someone else....
Anyone done this? Know anything about where to get such a thing?
well I managed to get most of the cost of an engine rebuild, radiator and a few other bits last year.
Easily paid for itself. Having just bought a Jeep with the same warranty the main thing I checked is the value of each claim. I once got 'stung' with a warranty that appeared to cover everything but actually had a max claim limit of £350 per claim and a maximum of £2000 per year.
What you need to check is that the claim covers anything that breaks up to the value of the car.Hope that all made sense.

Beware!
I missed my service mileage by 600 miles... and WH have just invalidated my warranty. All two goddam years of it.
I'm not a happy camper, and am writing to appeal, hoping they have a reasonable side. BMW gives you 1000 miles leeway, as do most other manufacturers AFAIK, and none of the services in my chim's history have been bang on the nail, one by a long shot.
Also, nowhere is it written (that I can find) that there's a hard limit of 500 miles over before the warranty goes pop.
A combination of forgetting the mileage I bought the car at (thinking 19600, when it was 19200!) plus forgetting to book the service earlier meant that I was 600 over.
Sheesh.
Jamesc - Are you equally as morose on the Ginetta list? As you don't own a TVR anymore do just come here to work your frustration off on us instead?

Indeed.
The warranty is from Warranty Holdings, NOT TVR. Brundle's stumped up for the first year's worth as part of the cost of the car. I paid a few hundred quid for the second year.
So, it's really not TVR or Brundle's problem.
I'll report back once I've written to, and had a reply from, WH.
Warranty Holdings only cover things that actually break, so it's no use going in to your dealer and telling them that your car runs a bit rough. That'll be put down to wear and tear. Of course, if you're only going to be using the car for track days, the chances are that if something goes wrong with the engine, it'll be completely lunched. As that's a failure, it would be covered.
I had a gearbox that was whining like a Surrey girl who'd had her allowance cut, but because it wasn't actually broken, it wasn't covered. If I'd been prepared to drive it until it failed and left me stranded at the side of the road, I'd have been fine, but as I was just about to leave on a 2,500 mile driving holiday in Europe, I didn't fancy it.

Marshy,
I once wrote to WHA because I was going to miss my service by about 500 miles. They wrote back to me saying "...the manufacturers allow a 750 mile leeway....as such an excess of 500 miles will not invalidate the policy.".
I don't know if this differs between models and/or years (I had a 97R Chimaera 500 at the time).
Mike.
