I'm very keen on purchasing a V-plate Speed Six from a local specialised, non TVR dealer. We agreed that he would send it to the local TVR dealer to get 'everything sorted out'. There is quite a list of things to do, shockers, brake discs etc. but whilst it was there they reported it has had two engine re-builds following damage due to loss of water and oil. Should I now stay clear? any opions valued, cheers.

Always scary, but if it's got a new engine then the history of the previous engines could be regarded as immaterial.

If you're worried about it happening with a Speed 6 then generally you're better off buying from within the dealer network. A car that has stayed within the network is looked upon more favourably by TVR should anything go wrong outside of warranty periods.

I wouldn't buy a Speed Six unless it has had an engine rebuild. It seems to me that ALL early Speed Six engines will suffer from a problem with the valves stretching at some point in time. Make sure that these modifications have been done before you buy.

.... by the way... my 99T Speed Six is spending Christmas in Blackpool getting said job done.. I'm selling up when it comes back... anyone interested??

How about calling it "benned" instead of "binned" Ted?!!

S6 debates are boring now. As for buying an S6 cerbie, I bet most of the early ones had to have a rebuild at some point, so if it has had a re-build more the better. However, I would recommend getting one with a warranty really....

If you really have to buy a Cerbera then try a 4.2 or 4.5,you would be nuts to buy a speed six.Had one for a year and engine rebuilt 2x and still wasn,t O.K,Sold it before it went pop again, had all recent mods atTVR.Me thinks it,s a duffer of an engine.

I agree, but lets face it, they must get it right at some point, surely??

I remember it too well. I bought one in the mid 80s - one that had been sorted apparently. And then the head gasket blew at 70mph.

After the rebuild it went superbly though. My first V8 experience!!

I've had my '99 Speed Six for 2 years now,I use it daily and have now done 45,000 miles in it.I've had a rebuild and after about 31,000 miles a brand new 2000 spec engine which is superb, despite being without it on 2 occasions for about a month at a time I have never regretted buying it, all work was done under warranty, at no expence to myself. So if you want one then go for it, you only live once, expect that there will be times when you will have problems, but just make sure you have a good warranty with the car
