My Granny is 74 yars old and desperate to drive my 4.2 cerby. She currently "drives" a 1.0 Nissan Micra automatic.

On one hand, I don't want her to total my pride and joy (and kill me/her in the process).

On the other hand, she is getting on and I would like her to die happy.

Any advice out there?

My girlfriend drove a 4.0 litre Chimaera for the first time on Saturday. She reversed it 4 feet to let a van open its back doors. To my amazement she managed to disarm the immobiliser, start the engine and find reverse all by herself. Furthermore she didn't even hit anything either.

I was so proud of her, I patted her on the head and gave her some sweeties.

Then she punched me.

My verdict is let granny have a go, otherwise she'll wrap her zimmer frame round your gizzard. She may be old, but she's still a woman and therefore dangerous.

Take her to a trackday. My girlf's idea of a performance car was a 1.6 Ford Fester until I let her go out in the Elan. She's now the happy part-owner of a 993 C4. Play along with your grandma, you never know, she might be thinking of you this Christmas !

Is she a 'competent' driver ?

A large % of the old ladies in Micras I see are all over the shop, at 20mph (on the motorway)

If she is, then it would sure be funny to see the faces of people as Granny revs it up and launches it past those Max power lads.

Let her have a go and get some pictures of the event - get her to nail the throttle while pootling along and take a photo or her (or your) face - should be priceless!!!

On a serious note: Make sure you get her insured for the day...and let her have a go...if yer gran actually WANTS to drive your Cerby I can't imagine that she doesn't know what she's letting herself in for.

Definitely record the event - should be a hoot!

So, did she drive it then ???

I mean, I am amazed that a granny would want to do so anyway. Good on her.

My Gran won't even get in mine!

However, my Mum said that it is the only car that she has ever seen that has impressed my Gran !

I'm off skiing in the new year for a week and rather than leave it in London for that time its going home and my mother is going to drive it.

The report at the end of that week should be entertaining!

I leant my mother my old griff last year when I went to NY.I returned earlier than expected and saw here driving it like a nutter (she is actually a qualified racing driver so she is entitled to do what she wants...however when I went to pick it up later that week she said she had hardly used it and did not enjoy driving it.....should have seen her face when I told her I had seen her roof down at 100 screaming past me on the A12.....should have had a polaroid...as for the Cerbie...first thing she did was grab the keys when I asked here if she wanted to go out in it...with an utter of'lets see what it can do'....she found out and so did I rather quicker than I really wanted to discover !!!!! So beware lads...older ladies know not just what they want from life but also from a performance car.....

I spoke to your mum and she can't have it now, and suggests you leave it at mine for the week.
