I appear to have a slow puncture, OK nothing special in that except that i can't see any sign of puncture damage to the tyre. Could be a duff valve but thoughts now turning to the new 18'' spyders...........anyone know of any problems with these with respect to cracking or porosity in the castings?

Certainly possible, but only way you're going to find out is if you puncture test each tyre? Or try swapping the rubber & rims on the different sides - that would narrow it down.

Why look for the most obscure reason? Could it not be possible that you have indeed got a slow puncture and you need to get it fixed.
