Speedo problem

On the way back from Le Mans the mileometer on my speedo got stuck on 19,999 miles. Someone suggested that if you take the car to 150 mph that this can sometimes free up the cogs to get it working again. Sounds like a bit of an old wives tale, but decided to give it a go anyway. Subsequently got to about 170 mph (on a secret private test track in Normandy of course) and although the needle went a bit wild it did not turn over to 20,000 miles.

So, anyone else have any ideas? Can it be freed up manually, or do I need a new clock? If it needs a new clock, would a dealer wind it on to the current mileage, as I would rather not start from zero again?

i saw something on hear i little while ago where someone said to hit the speedo, as this sometimes helped it move on. don't know if this helps, but worth a go????

dont believe that speedos can be brought up to current mileage ie back to zero. But I wouldnt worry about it. This is a common item for TVRs.

Flick the Trip reset a few times while moving, works for mine.

Seen this a few times on various cars a good bang usually does the trick, alternatively remove the top cowling (only two wing nuts) might be able to free it from behind.

Mine did the same at 29,999

Drive it for a few miles and then drive along tapping the speedo screen at about 50 mph. Dealers advice and it worked - miracle

It will probably do it again at 29,999 on yours...

Reverse the car over a fair few metres. This worked for us (by accident, just taking it out of the drive.

Friend of mine (Jo Williams) had the same problem. A quick tap on the speedo, and it's all started working again !

Thanks for the advice folks. I've tried tapping the speedo and resetting the trip, but worth another go I guess. Hadn't thought about the reversing trick...will give that a go as well!

Same happened to me on the way to Le Mans. I visited the same Normandy race track as yourself and voi la it started working.

I had the same problem at 19,999. Reversing managed to sort it out. Then it happened again at 29,999. Nothing I did sorted it, so I ended up having to get the speedo replaced.

It looked like my car was brand new again

I recently had the same prob at 29999. After covering 30+ miles it started working again.
