Help!! - Lumpy Ride
Discussion
Took her out for a quick spin earlier then as soon as I stretched her legs, the car just felt really lumpy through the gears, it just didn't feel smooth at all. It also pops alot when accelerating (definately not right), especially in 3rd with hardly any pull at all. 1st OK, 2nd OKish but 3rd and 4th you can feel it alot. I noticed it when as soon as I filled her up (Optimax) but I did warm her up before I got there some 15 minutes before so wouldn't of noticed it from the start.
There's also more popping and banging than usual on the overrun.
Checked Oil Pressure and temp and everything is OK as normal. MIL light hasn't come on.
Could it be the CAT or HT Leads / Plug or Throttle / Valve problem? Or something worse?
Done a search on here and didn't find too much related apart from one thread sometime ago.
Anyone had this problem or can give me some advice?? Would be very grateful for any help.

Thankfully not had this problem. But since an engine is an engine, it very much sound like a) the mixture is wrong, and its pinking (what fuel have you put in ?) is the air filter clean, fuel pump clear, or
b) possible piston ring failure leading to oil buring in the combustion chambers ?? or yes ECU/Cat Probs.
When was it last serviced, and for the sake of your engine stop driving it now. For the sake of the car hope you have a good dealer to take it to. (Can always get a second opinion 1st if you know a local tuner). If the thing has HT leads (Does it ???), then its not firing on all cylinders. (How does it sound at 1,000 revs (when standing still). ? GOOD LUCK...

Optimax as usual and double checked (as always) before filling up.

I had it serviced approx 3K ago

It sounds OK at 1,000 RPM, it seems fine low down in the revs but gets bad high up. I'll give Castle a call tomorrow morning anyway, just hoping it's nothing too bad. Cheers.

I had a throttle pot / linkage / balancing / ?? problem originally after I picked it up and that was sort of sorted out, well the problem never returned. It's been perfect for over 3K.
Are you joking?? Oil on a spark plug needed an Engine Rebuild, surely not. I did have a slight oil leak at the weekend where one of the hoses had split but I fixed it and it stopped leaking. The car was OK for nearly two days after that.

big_t,
Your extra popping and banging seems to imply a misfire. These are frequently caused by duff throttle pot(s) and HT leads or such like. As has been mentioned the plugs may be at fault for a variety of reasons.
Bear in mind that there are two throttle pots, so having (one of) them replaced and the pair balanced doesn't mean the other one won't go. Indeed, it may be likely as they'd both be the same age, and they don't last for ever (by a long chalk).
Still, it's only a five minute job for someone with the gear to see if they're at fault, or if you need to look elsewhere.
Having said that, I've always had a flick of the MIL light at the point the pot failed. Still, it's easy to miss.

All that worry, I'm pleased to hear misfiring cos of the leads. Know what ! cerbie owners tend to hear nothing but the bad stories. The TVR isn't the only car that breaks down or runs ruff once in a while. Had mine in today to tighten up the hand brake, and adjust idle speed up. Only been out the garage 2 weeks. But for some reason we all think the worst. As long as its not driven like an F1 car it should last as good as any other ?.
