Slowed down for a horse today..of course my beast popped and banged like the best of them. The horse thought it was facing the muskets and attempted to leap out into road, luckily for me weight of large rider prevented horse from reacting quickly! Oscar Wilde's description of horses was right, ugly at both ends and damn uncomfortable inbetween. I'm rambling but we always get someone doing this on a Friday and I think its my turn! Bon Weekend all.

Why did your beast pop and bang? Surely brake application alone doesn't cause this.

What if the rider had been displaced and seriously injured?

Dip clutch, coast slowly by, give rider cheery wave, mumble under your breath about Pedigree Chum and glue and continue on your way.

Not hard really is it...........

To be fair I think mudstud was referring to the tendancy for Blackpool's finest to pop and bang on the overrun when you back off to pass said geegees.

Difficult to know what to do....

Got it in one JeremyC, after a spot of hard acceleration if the foot comes off the throttle she pops and bangs. I guess cerbera's and horses are incompatible.

Come on! On so they pop and fire, but only when you want them to and I am running sports pipes. If you just dip the clutch then hit the brakes you avoids the pops.... If arrive in 4th at 2000 and drop it to second then of course the overrun will cause some noise... that's why we all do it, but not next to horses...

Of course as soon as you hit the brakes they will squeel like a bas*&rd and you'll probably end up covered in horse s&*t anyway!

What is he fell on your lap?! Sounds a large chap - that would have dented more than your pride . .

Didn't we convoy past horses on SR2 quite happily? . . Didn't even know we were there

Hazard perception.

You sould have had time to slow down to a safe speed, doing all your "popping and banging" at a distance, then overtake keeping the engine at low revs so as not to startle the horse.

Or of course, you can just scream past them at full chat, unsettle the horse which displaces the rider, ready for the next idiot that comes along not expecting to find a person lying in the middle of the road. Hmmmm - nice scenario.

well said Byff. Horses have as much right to be there as anyone else. Anyone failing to see a hazard the size of a horse and take appropriate action in plenty of time shouldn't be on the road. That being said, some horse riders must try harder as well.

why do horses have any right on the road? they don't pay road tax, you don't need a license, they haven't got indicators, number plates and they get in the bl**dy way and do they have insurance?
rant over.

Legal right of way pre-dating the car by about 1000 years ? That is the same argument the offroaders use for knackering green lanes though
Same goes for pedestrians and pushbikes, but then you never walk on the road do you ?

I live in a small village where it seems more people own a horse and cart than own cars. "Plastic Gypsies", as they are known around this area.

Some of these 'chariots' are piloted by junior 'Ben Hur's' as young as 8 or 9 years old; 'four up' at times. Then Mr Hur, who only appears on a Sunday morning with his performance chariot to block the dual carriage way whilst he takes on a like minded Charlton Heston in a 4 mile cuddy race, pulls off at nearest slip road to hand over the £8.60 winners purse.

Hopefully, in the meantime, they haven't stampeeded your Cerbera..... INSURANCE PAH!

Clearly a few horse lovers in our midst....feel free to post any pics!! At least thread helped Friday fly by. Now I'm off to practice dipping the clutch & breaking to avoid pops. Watch out for rapidly decelerating Cerb with no obvious reason for doing so!
