You may have seen in a previous thread that my 4.5 was running on 4 and pinking. Its now cured. It needed 2 new throttle pots and apparantley it was running hot so a new thermostat was fitted and the system was bled. The plugs were also replaced even though I had replaced them myself 1 week earlier.The ECU was reset what ever that means. I took all the panels off so as to save on labour costs. How much do you think the bill was? You,ve got to laugh. or you,d cry.

I just fitted new pots to my 97 4.2- £18 each from tms
coolant- cheap as chips
pulgs- ditto
reset ecu, clear codes, & set up pots should be less than £100 for this.
They didn't slip a new clutch in there by accident as well did they?
please name & shame these bandits!

Well rules for posting forbid me from nameing and shaming.I live in north London. It was a authorised dealer as I did not want to drive car any distance for fear of causing further damage.

The ECU was reset what ever that means.
If you're looking there for the source of your labour charge, then it involves pulling out the carpet covered panel at the foot of the passenger footwell [no screws/bolts - it just pulls out], pulling the ECU off it's velcro mounts, undoing 4 allen screws to take off the top of the box and connecting an RS232 cable from their PC.
Now the tricky bit. With the ECU diagnostics program fired up, you go ECU Tools -> Reset Adaptive Maps and then ECU Tools -> Reset Fault Codes. Disconnect cable, put top back on box, stick box back on velcro and press carpet panel back.

I just had the same done (two throttle pots, new temperature sender), plus various additional new connectors due to corrosion on the contacts, right back to oxidation on the ecu itself by my prefered indie. It solved the overheating (ecu thought the engine was running cold and refused to turn on fans ), and a MIL light problem that has plagued the car for a number of years (according to the previous owner) and evidenced by numerous bills for leads/new plugs/multiple head scratching/labour charges by a main dealer. Total cost for a now smoooooth running Cerbie £308 inclusive. In my opinion A1
