Had a little bit of fun with a bike last night.
from 0 - 70 he pulled away a bit but from about 90 or so I reeled him in and at about 120 left him. Not sure if he was bottling it at that speed though.
Amazing that a car can give bikes a reasonable run.

Must have been a small bike, or the guy wasn't trying.

Don't kid yourself that a Cerbera can out-accelerate a reasonable bike up to say 140. Corners are a different matter, but even my very elderly [like nearly 20 years old] GPz1100 is light-years quicker than the Cerbera.

My old GPz was road tested on the early 80s as being capable of 10-second 1/4 miles, and things have got lots faster in the last 20 years. Best time I can see for a Cerbera on a 1/4 mile is 12.4 and 118 mph. By comparison, I see that Suzuki Hayabusas and Kawasaki ZX12s are around 10.2 seconds and 137 mph...that's some 20 mph faster than a cerbera in 400 yards! There's figures for a Yamaha R1 at 9.8 seconds and 152mph - don't know if it was standard tough.

Sportsbike acceleration is to Cerbera, as Cerbera acceleration is to GTi!

Agree with William, over a hundred it depends very much on the bike but any decent bike will clear off in the drag before that **if the rider has the nuts for it**.

In top a Cerb S6 starts to out punch 600 sportsbikes like my zx6r somewhere after 120.

However the new gsxr1000 does 0 to 150 in 11.5 seconds - 1 second quicker than the mclaren and 2 seconds quicker than the Enzo - and goes on to hit the rev limiter in top at 185.

Not bad for 8 and a half grand..... and totally out of reach of any 4 wheels costing less than half a million.

Guess the hayabusa / blackbird / zx12's are similar.

The character and thrill of TVR are the closest I've driven to a bike but I recommend trying 2 wheels to all.

Whilst I agree with all of the above, as a TVR and GSXR driver/rider, I would like to add that a high performance car like a TVR, driven by a capable driver, will easily outrun any bike ridden by a less confident rider unless long straights are involved.

In biking, there's so much "it's not HOW you ride, but WHAT you ride" mentality these days, which means there are lots of people riding around on big thou's that should be riding CBR600s. Modern sports 600s are absolutely perfect for the UK roads, but many of us (including myself) want more CC, without having the bottle or indeed skill to get anything from the power increase, other than the luxury of not having to work up and down the gears all the time.

I was out on a blast with a mate on an RSV Mille last week and on a nice twisty A road came upon a guy in a Subaru Impreza. He fancied stopping us overtaking and started caning it up to 120+mph. At that speed, on the roads we were riding, there was no way I could get past him. No long straight appeared, and his car was hugging the road very well on the bends, so despite the fact that my bike could piss all over his car on paper performance, in the real-world driving conditions he out performed me.

I did say 'corners are a different matter'.

I'll make far better cross country progress in the Cerbera [traffic permitting] than I could on the GPz.

...and probably make the best progress of all in the MegaBlade!

Think that the point generally made and generally accepted is that due to the infinitesimal contact patch of the rear tire on a sports bike combined with the even smaller contact patch of the front (assuming that it’s on the ground) braking and therefore corner entry and exit speeds are slower than a car.

Having 4 sports profile tires with a large surface area contact patch and 4 substantial brake discs and car can brake later and harder and get on the power earlier. The bike will reel in the car on the straights. The Clarkeson video was taken at Thruxton, a circuit known for being very fast esp the back part of the circuit. The R1 passed the Porsche on this section with ease, as it did away from the line. Into the slower corners and then the final chicane the car was able to retake the lead – it has to be said, ideal racing lines aside Jason Plato driving the Porsche nearly lost it at the chicane trying to out brake the bike.

Real world the car is going to be faster on a twisty road than a bike – as already mentioned in an earlier thread with the Scobie v’s the bike. For the record:

Cerbera 4.5

0 to 100 mph:
8.3 secs

0 to 150 mph:
17.9 secs

Yes the figures are closer to an R1 than you’d credit !!

I thought the R1 could hack 150 in not far off 10 seconds?

On and to be totally pedantic, the size of the contact patch is based on the tyre pressure and weight of the vehicle not the tyre size, so yes bikes to have skinnier tyres than cars but the smaller contact patch is brought about by their lesser weight.

Anyway, who cares. In a nice day the bike is fast and fun, and the Cerbera is fast and fun in a different way and in a wider range of weathers!

An interesting thread. But if we're actually talking real world you'd have probably got where you were going in a VW Microbus - let alone a TVR - before a biker had got into his leathers!

Sorry WB maybe my thread wasn't too clear, yeap the contact patch of a given tire (bike or car) will change given air pressure and weight. But...... the size of the tire does have an impact on the available tire surface area that is ever in contact with the road. This diagram might explain it a bit better

In a straight line the contact patch of a bike tire will be less than when cornering due to the shoulder of the tire being used in cornering. However a 225/45ZR-16 tire (not even the tire used on the Cerbera 4.5) has a larger contact patch given both tires running at their recomended air pressure. Sorry hope this is viewed as pedantic

As you say both have their merit both which everway you look at it are feckin quick !!

Oooh, a descussion on pedantics. How I love 'em

The diagram you have just illustrates the slip angle surely ? [don't call be Shirley], which doesn't have much to do with the contact area - but yes a car tyre should allow greater slip angle than a bike tyre - anyway bike tyres don't really get that involved much with slip angles do they?

Point is, if you have a vehicle that weighs 2000 lbs, and you have tyres at 20 psi, then the contact area will be 100 square inches - period. If the contact area had to be larger, say 200 square inches, then you would have 10 pounds per square inch, in other words 10psi. The shape of the contact area will change with wider or narrower tyres, or upright or banked-over tyres in the case of the bike, but for a given weight and tyre pressure the contact patch will remain the same area.

OK, as the tyre isn't absolutely elastic and there is a tread pattern there will be slight variations but...

Hey how did we get on to this subject? I thought this all started with a Cerb pulling away from a wuss on a Bike?

Yeah the diagram is relative to slip angles, but the green patch indicates the contact patch, that's what I refering to rather than the degrees of slip.

My leathers are definitely leather, and what does that Clarkson man know anyway? Don't think he even rides a bike...big jessie...but he wears a leather bike jacket just to look cool. I wear a leather bike jacket on the bike, but never in the car. Seems too twatish to me.

Guys whilst I don't condone the use of high speeds on the road, I have also whoooped the as** of a Hayabusa on a local straight road. He is a mate and we have an Mpeg of it!!

Bike comes off of roundabout onto straight and floors it followed quickly by Cerb (which is a red rose 4.5 btw)
Bike accelerates away gets to 90 ish and cerb passes like it is standing still!!
Mate that was sat with me is a biker and used to be in a rather well known club was shocked and impressed too especially with the flames from the bike where he was ringing its neck!!

I am pleased to report that the Cerb won with flying colours!!!

Shame I would love to see it. My two favourite things: TVR's and fast bikes.

Can you see no. plates in it?

This is from another posting www.zfilter.com/z.php?id=8075 I thorght the speedo was in KPH but is MPH!! Don't know what bike it is but doubt many cars even Cerbies or Tuscans could keep up with that.
