How much oil from low mark to high?

Just a quick question, does anyone know how much oil is required to fill the car from the low mark to the high mark and is it linear?

So far I place the guessing game when topping up, but would be useful to know, if it is half way between, how much oil do I need to add?

This is for a 98 4.2..
