Improving the exhaust note
Discussion
I am looking for options around improving the exhaust note from my standard 4.5 LW. I have seen lots of threads around de-catting and sports exhausts etc, and I am looking for recommendations.
I am not keen on removing the cats, nor modifying the existing set-up (e.g. removing baffling materials), so I guess I am looking for a sports exhaust - but have no clue where to start.
Who makes these things? What differences in sound should I expect? How much should I expect to pay?
Can anyone recommend somewhere not too far from London that has experience with fitting sports exhaust to Cerberas?
Cheers

I've tried most of the combinations - cat & std. exhaust, cat & sports exhaust, no cat & sports exhaust. I'm just about to try the 'other' combination of no cats and std. exhaust!
Sports pipes are probably the most common mod - I got mine from Peninsula. It's been so long now, I can't remember what the standard car sounded like, but the sports pipes are certainly quite loud - infact, when I recently decatted with the sports pipes I didn't think it was much louder at idle - it was only when applying full throttle that it really got loud!
The main thing from what I remember is that it drowned out the tappity/chain noise from the engine at idle.
Obviously i'll have a pair of sports pipes doing nothing after I swap for a std. back box. If you want them, let me know - obviously they're not perfect (they're 2 years old!), but I won't be asking £300 either!

futie, cheers for the info. I'm definitely interested in buying your sports pipes assuming you decide the de-cat and standard pipes is the way forward for you.
Are they in decent nick? Ever needed welding?
Is your car a 4.5? It looks from Penninsula's website that their is a difference between pipes for 4.2 and 4.5/SP6? My car is a year 2000 4.5 LW.
Having traded up from a 450 Chim, I am missing the deep warble from the Rover V8, and feel the standard sound from the Cerbera is very flat and tinny in comparison. I am hoping that sports pipes will give it a bit more depth. Is that the case, or does the flat and tinny sound just get louder?
Cheers

I have a 4.5 LW Red Rose. I've had it de-catted but retained the std silencer and had orig tailpipes cut off and replaced with 3" ones - they really fill the body cutaway properly and look the bizz. Good sound and LOTS of overrun popping. Also de-cat made engine a bit more peppy. I had sports silencers on my old 4.2 and tried them on the 4.5 but never liked the noise - not as good as the 4.2 made. 4.2 and 4.5 share same exhaust system - manifolds thru silencers.
Cheers.
Cheers.
Gixxer,
Depends on what you mean by 'good nick'. I'll take a picture of them when they're off the car and you can decide for yourself. They're fine on a (slightly tatty) '97 4.2 - you only see the end bits after all! But not sure about a posher 4.5! No welding - they are the second set i've had - the first ones were nothing more than motorbike cans which were riveted. They fell apart and started rattling like hell about 9 months after they were fitted.

Not wishing to tread on anybody's toes, but I have a brand new pair in stainless for a 4.2 (same as 4.5 I believe) which I bought from Peninsula about a year ago, but sold the car before I got round to fitting them. They are sitting in the garage still not unpacked. I assume they are new and correct, but I haven't looked !! If they are any good to anybody, 150 notes + carriage would take them away. Email through my profile if interested. Sorry Ted, I know I shouldn't advertise, but it's on topic and a philanthropic act to a fellow PH'er potentially !!
