anyone know where the knob might be on a 98 4.5 Cerb - had aircon pipes fixed and a re-gas but the temp doesnt get very cold and I cant find an adjustment. I have got a thermometer on my voltage meter and am going to see what it gives out this weekend. I assume it should be about 3 deg c ? Any colder and it might freeze up too much?
Not quite sure what you mean by knob? There is an on/off button, but the system is not a climate control/temperature controlled system but rather simply on or off hence no adjustment. I have recently had mine recharged and the resulting temperature difference is totally underwelming . I have been told the system is pretty useless and I therefore would also be interested in any ways of making it more effective.
I don't think I helped mine by reving the engine sufficiently to snap the Aircon drive belt .
It was suggested by one person that instead of putting in a new belt, I open the widows and use the British climate as an alternative !!!!

Due to exactly this British climate, I don't think that I've even ever switched on the Air Con ...
Is it necessary to have the cold air vent on full ? I had naively thought that this would actually contribute to setting the temp. Does it make any difference, or am I simply just blowing the colder air harder into the cabin ... ?
Judging from your post Suffolkfox, the answer probably is that it makes hee haw difference ...

IIRC it is a head in the footwell job. I think there is an adjuster to the left of the steering wheel (as you are looking up at it).
Check in the archives, because I think mycerbera posted a picture of what it looks like.
The only warning (sorry if I am preaching to the church choir) is to be careful not to turn it down too far, otherwise the A/C coolant starts to freeze. This is indicated by strong A/C performance for a short time, followed by it decreasing. Switching the A/C off for a bit, and then back on will restore the performance (since the engine bay will soon defrost the coolant). In this case, you'll need to turn it up.

with ref to a/c most cause of it not working is that it is short of refrigerant and the compressor stops running or the evaporator which is inside the car (ie the cooling bit) frosts up and prevents airflow. The coolant within the system cannot freeze This is r134a
Even though I repair car a/c I do not have it on my 4.2
I@m a tight bastard.
Remember that you are giving up about 2 hp of engine power when running the a/c!!!!!!!!!
