All,
During a run this morning an intermitant problem
started to occur.(As if ignition was being turned off and on)At First it was occasional then became quite frequent until complete failure.
However, when left for a while engine would restart. Once on the move the same pattern would start to occur.
Eventually the battery light came on. So upon my very fustrating return to the pad,(stop/start) I decided to check for Voltage output at battery ,not good.10.2v at tick over,falling as revs were increased.
I Rang Mole Valley and explained the problem and a helpful chap suggested the Altenator fuse located toward the back of the engine may have corroded; apparently a common fault. I checked for this and 'hey bingo'the fuse was badly corroded.
At that momment I put the two terminals together,by-passing the fuse ,restarted engine in order to re-check voltage output. Great,13.4v and rising .So order a new fuse and away to go ..........Nope.
AA have just brought the car back after breaking
down 1/2 mile from the house.(not nice)
This time , battery light did not come on.

A voltmeter has a very high impedance so will measure voltages accurately but this doesn't mean that there is any significant current flowing in the circuit.
If the fuse was corroded then perhaps the terminals were also? Did you clean them before replacing the fuse? Was the fuseholder intact? they often melt or break. Did you recharge the battery before taking it for a run? The symtoms you describe certainly point to the charging fuse. Doesn't sound like the alternator since you get a healthy reading when bypassing the fuse.
