Had light ticking noise, coming from engine area, so decided to check the exhaust manifold bolts- all ok but noticed cracks in the manifold, not huge, but big enough.
checked other side & also cracked! Have applied Holts firegum as temp measure & seems ok, has anyone else had this problem? & how did you fix it?
Can the manifolds be welded / welded in situ.
What sort of money should i be looking at to get this fixed?

Happened to my 1998 4.5 a couple of times in the first few years. Welding provided temporary relief. My second manifold appears to be more durable and the problem has not happened since it was fitted.

Joolz at Joospeed was able to strengthen the manifold and is now developing his own version - available soon.

Definitely a common problem - welding is a common fix, and can sometimes last for years, other times weeks. New manifolds are pretty pricey though!

are the manifolds cast iron? or steel?

Not sure as to the type of metal, looking at it, i would say mild steel.

Is there a high temp version of JB quikweld? Might be worth a try?

manifolds are stainless, there's two versions - small bore on early cars and large bore on post 98 cars I think.
At last I'm in a position to make the first pair of long primary pipe manifolds .. been a long time coming but the test car is in the workshop right now. watch this space ..

if they are made out of stainless steel i will weld them up for free, but ive just seen where you live?, it might cost too much in postage?

not very well actually .. not enough space to get the large bore pipes in with decent bends and be able to get to the bolts to tighten it all up .. also looks like they won't go in without fitting to engine first and then putting engine in car! Oh well .. 7 hours spent so far, might as well have another couple of hours before getting really pissed off!!!

If they don't fit properly, esp. near the chassis bits, why not just heat up the offending area then bash it with a hammer until it's 1/2 the bore it used to be, and completely the wrong shape.

It's only for an inch or two, I guess, so probably won't make much difference.

don't worry lads and ladettes .. working on another avenue to perk the little beggars up .. will know more after tuesday ...
