Guys,

Want to replace the front door speakers in my '98 cerb for something a little better. I think one of them has stopped working and rather than replace the offending speaker I want to bin them both.

I have trawled the archives and found out that the choice is limited due to the lack of space available but that is about it.

On one of the threads someone mentioned fitting Kenwood component speakers, anyone know which ones?

I am looking for recommendations from people who have upgraded their stereos.

Cheers

Rob.

i used alpine components in conjunction with a quality 3 channel amp and 10" sub.

i tried a cheaper amp just powering the sub to start with but wasn't convinced so changed to above.

the sub works much better in the boot rather than in the rear seats, due mainly to a airtight enclosure,in my case installed in the passenger side recess of the boot up the edge of the fuel tank, looks very neat.

the sound is nice and clear with good bass available.

Upgrading my speakers this weekend, decided that I didn't want to make any additional holes in the car so am sticking with the original sizes, think it's 6" front and 4" rears. After looking around have gone for a set of Focal 165cv (built in Tweeter, so no more holes) in the front and 100ca (these have to be slim as not much room) in the back.

Can let you know how it goes after the weekend.

Rob

Upgraded ours for about around £100 and that's all 4 speakers. Went for Pioneers.

Best advice would be to pop into a car audio dealer and test different makes/models to find out which sounds best to you

Cheers guys.

Have any of you done the upgrade yourselves?
How easy is it to get the front speakers off and do you
have to remove the door panel?

Do you have to remove any trim to get the rear speakers out?

I am totally confident with wiring but if the trim part is tricky then I may leave it to the professionals

I replaced my damaged front speakers with Kenwood KFC 1768S (£49.99)which were better spec than the original pioneers that were fitted. The only problem I had is that I could not find speakers of exactly the same diameter. The originals were 6" and these were 170mm diamter. However using a sharp stanley knife it is quite easy to open up the aperature enough for them to fit. Be cautious of buying anything which has too large a magnet at the back because the space for this to pass through the door panel is limited.

You do not need to remove the door panel to remove or replace the speakers

To remove most speakers all you do is ease off the speaker grill (often only push fit) and then remove retaining screws. If you can, remove a speaker and take it into your local stereo shop to get the closest fit replacement you can.

Mike, How did you fix the amplifier to the recess?
I am also upgrading the speakers - been recommended Alpine SPR176As (components) for the front which are 70mm deep - will these go in?
I would also like to know if anyone can recommend a good 100mm speaker for the rear as Alpine only do low end speakers at this size.

the sub is in the recess with the amp on the fuel tank, obviously not screwed to it but velcroed on the back(male self adhesive velcro on the amp,the carpet acts as the female side).sounds a little dodgy i know, but the amp has never moved and its not small.

the amp needs to be accessible so you can set up the sound easily.

as for front speakers i think 70mm will go,but if not a small spacer ring could be used to help.

i have no rear speakers connected, just the fronts and the sub.
the sound easily fills the car once balanced off the amp and head unit with the relatively cheap alpines coping very well even at high volumes.

i think the seperate tweeters definately helps the sound quality.
(when i get my car back i could post a picture if it helps)

Brentonw,

I read on a past thread about this that the max depth for the front door speakers is 55mm. But as mlumb said, a spacer ring could easily be used.

I am torn between replacing the existing 4 seakers with pioneer TS E-1675 (and smaller ones for the rear) or going for the alpine spr176A (and still pioneers for the rear).

The only thing putting me off the alpines is the fact that you have to wire an external crossover in plus find somewhere for the tweeters (and run the cable to them neatly). I will try and listen to them both and see if the difference is worth the extra bother.

The crossovers do make a difference and improve the quality, I'm having Focal's fitted with the Tweeter in the main speaker so that I don't have to cut extra holes for the tweeters but still utilise a crossover.
