Tappets Adjustments on 24k Service

Hi there, does anyone know when the tappets really need to be adjusted apart from the dealer telling you? Are there any signs that we can look out for? Just dropped my car off this morning for the 24k service and they said that they will need adjusting before they even start. Also, how do we know they have been adjusted? Any thoughts? Danny. Hi - asked my service man about this. You can't hear them like you could on an old MGB, but if they tighten/loosen over 12000 miles which apparently they are more prone to do the less the car is used, then the efficiency of each individual cylinder becomes variable and it makes it very difficult to set the engine tune. I guess they might be able to tell if they put the engine on the diagnostics first - but there again, they might not.....
