Just noticed whilst coming back from the Mid Essex TVRCC meeting this afternoon that the cooling fans on my 4.5 Cerbera were not coming on at all!
The temperature guage was moving past 105C when we hit stationary traffic on the M25.
Whilst the car was on the move it ran normally at around 80C.
When I got home, I let the car idle and noticed that indeed the fans did not come on!
I have checked the fuse in the boot panel - all OK there!.
Does anyone know where the "thermo-switch" is located on a 4.5 Cerb and is it difficult to check / replace?
Has anyone else had similar problems?
Any help gratefully received .
I suppose that as this is my 1st mechanical problem in my 2 years ownership I should consider myself lucky!

Thanks very much for your input everyone.
I will try to locate the thermostatic switch tomorrow.
Ches, do you know who might sell the thermostatic switch, or indeed which car manufacurer did it originate from?
What about the relays in the fuse board? Does anybody know how I might check these and where I might get these from?
Once again many thanks for all the help received.
Leszek.

As a postscrpt to this, another cause for fans not coming on is the connector for them is in an exposed place, and often corrodes internally.
It's notmally located at the bottom centre of the fans and tends to sit in a little shelf formed by the lower portion of the fan housing. This can fill with water in wet weather and the connector corrodes. Net result: fans not comiong on. Solution is to pull the connector apart and clean contact. Alternatively, cut it off and connect the wires directly.

IIRC they come on about 7 degrees apart. I had a problem last year testing the second one as with the bonnet open the first fan was enough to lower the temp. The passenger side fan should come on first followed by drivers side. Interestingly for me when the A/C was out of gas the engine had to be running in order for the fans to operate. Once the A/C had been refilled the fans would come on if required (engine hot enough) with the ignition on but engine off. Never could work out why.
david beer said: Ah, that explains it, well for me. The thing on the Rad must be a sensor rather than a switch,(unless it is two channel) then the ECU turns the fans on.
It is indeed the ECU which actually turns on and off the fans. However, single fan running (when two are fitted) on my car was fixed by cleaning the connector as described above. So, I think it's worth checking it if you can only get one fan to come on.
I'll grant you that it's easier to check when it isn't so f-f-f-freezing cold.
