Nasty rattly brakes?
Discussion
Hello all,
I am hoping someone can help diagnose some wierd noises coming from my Cerb.
I have just had a full service and have done 70 miles since. New brake pads were fitted on the rear - green ones. The weather has been good lately so I have been driving with both windows down. I have noticed a rattly / clicking noise coming from the passenger side towards the back of the car underneath. It sounds like something is loose but I can't see what. When I pop it out of gear and coast it becomes quite noticeable.
However, whilst coasting along if you rest your foot on the brake pedal to sort of take up the first few mm of slack the noise stops. This leads me to believe that something has gone awry with new pads. Could this be so and if so what is the cause and cure?
Hoping for some pointers.
Tony

Sounds like it may be the pads rattling in the calipers. In which case, nothing to worry about and it'll probably stop on its own after enough brake dust has built up on the calipers. Do your calipers have anti-rattle springs holding the pads in?
Thanks for the response Peter,
I am unsure about the anit-rattle springs as I have not done any of the work on the car myself and quite frankly I am not sure how I would check. Can you point me in the right direction?
Since it is only coming from one side do you think I do have these springs and perhaps the garage left them off on one side?
How many miles does it normally take for the dust to build up and stop the noise? The brake squeal at the moment is like a train pulling into a station buts seems to be getting better.
Thanks
Tony

Hi,
I think this is fairly commom...
If you take out the pads that are rattling (on that side thats the problem) put some copper grease onto the backs of them - the part that the piston touches and it may cure them from rattling.
Or maybe fit some new springs in between the two pads!
Otherwise like the others say, wait a while or try a new set of pads.
Hope this helps
David

They all do that sir...eventually.
The pads sit on little steel plates inside the alloy calliper. These will distort over time [with the help of corrosion] so that the pad gets tighter the further away it is from the disk i.e.new pads. You therefore grind down the backing plate on new pads to make them fit. As they wear and move forward in the caliper, they move into the wider gap and then rattle. If that makes sense.
