Oil Usage

I've had my 4.5 Cerb for slightly over 1 month, and have completed about 1200 miles. I have checked my oil every time I drive it, it hasn't used any! should this be a worry? or do I drive it like an old lady?

Mine hasn't used any either, I don't worry about it, in fact, i'd worry if it was using oil.

I thought they are supposed to use about 1 ltr per 1000 miles?
Not that I'm complaining.

My 4.5 uses about 1ltr between services. It's been like that for the last 2+ years. I've relaxed the oil checks a little coz I seemed to be wiping more off the dipstick than the engine was using! I guess consumption is down to oil viscosity, how you drive and the condition of the engine.

My early 4.2 uses just over a litre per 1000miles, seems each car uses different amounts, i use 0w/40 oil, which perhaps explains why i use a lot. My car has spent a lot of time idling in heavy traffic lately which contributes as well.

Ours (late 97 4.2) uses about 4 litres in 6,000 miles, but again, we use the thin stuff, so this may contribute.

I think the rule is anything up to about 1 litre per thousand miles is perfectly normal...

I have a 96 4.2 which used 1ltr every 100miles needed a set of rings and valve seals.

It has not used any in over 2000miles since having the work done.

I have heard 1ltr per 1000miles is normal but individual cars do differ I dont think you have anything to worry about.

Used to check my 98 4.5 every week, then once a month and now every 500 miles - she hasn't used any in 2500 miles

could it be that it was overfilled to begin with? I did not have to top mine up until 3k miles and was getting leaks at the front spoiler

Leaks at front spoiler are just from the over (or freshly) oiled air filter gauze dripping down. Not engine oil.
