HI all,,

Well my first post, been reading for a while. But now that I am about to make the plunge into Cerbera ownership in the next few weeks i have a question(s).

The Cerbera I am looking at got exported to the Channel islands and they do not require an MOT.
The guy who owns it got the Cats removed at the factory before delivery.

So will a cerbera pass the MOT without CATS??
If not how much do they cost??

I'm sure its all been asked before but can't find anything on the search.

Cheers

whatever

I think, from the consensus of opinion expressed on here in the past, that the answers are "no" and "quite a bit" (times two).

Mine has no cats and is going for an mot WITHOUT them in the next week or two. Will see what happens.
They are over a grand for a pair but other companies also make them and I think this almost halves the price (Andy at APM can sort).
If you like the car then get it.
Remember - cerbs destroy cats anyway ie they have plenty of backfiring, mis firing etc going on at the rear which stuffs cats anyhow (or so I am told).

I think yours will probably be allright as it is classed as an import from a contry which didnt require them by law(dont know if that bits true).
As i think TVR exported cars without Cats.

If i am Talking Bo!!ocks someone tell me.

If its the purple one I have seen advertised from Jersey then it looks like a bargain. A set of cats would be small price to pay for that purple beast.

Perhaps you could get a set on 'rental' for a few days over the MOT? Perhaps not.

At my last MOT I was told that there was no way a Cerb was going to pass an MOT emissions test without fully functional CATS. If your car requires a UK MOT then it will have to meet the test requirements for that class and age of vehicle. I personally think you'll need to fork out for some new CATs - my local dealer quoted me around £360 each - but I'd be very interested to know if you got away with it.

A cerbie V8 won't pass the emmissions test without cats, many don't pass with cats! .. if you require some then I can do for 300 pounds each plus vat and carriage but the cheapest way may be to borrow some good ones from a local club member.

You never know, we might be able to get together a set (or sets) of PH 'loan' cats specifically for MOTs.

I'm sure there are a few sets lurking at the back of garages.

as i understand it, because the car was exported to a country not requireing(?) cats, when it is reimported to the U.K the mot testers will make allowance provided you explain the story ( & maybe a copy of the Jersey logbook). Check with a sportscar friendly Mot station first.

Failing the above, I have a '97 4.2 that i'm looking to decat( i'm in Guernsey & no mots here either!)
If your intrested let me know, both are in vgc.

Darren.

That's what I understand the regs to be as well...

Pretty sure if the car was 'built' for the export market ie no cats for Jersey, as long as it was there for six months you should be OK.

Cheers

I,m sorry but the more i think of it the more i am convinced it Doesnt need the cats for the MOT.
TVR supplied it with out Cats to a country who doesnt require them.
When it is then imported to this country, Cerbera or Ford Focus it doesnt matter It dosen't need them put on. Can see a car failing bescause it is imported and it is LHD(Bad example i know)

thinking about and wanting to know the Law Regarding this subject(sad i know)

If it is the purple one mentioned above I have some bad news for you.....

I seriously looked into it a couple of months ago as I have just bought a Cerby. You will have to pay tax on it when importing it. I did a fair bit of research on the matter and spoke to a few people at Customs & Excercise. the VAT is 17.5% and then a further 10% (not sure about the exact figure here as I have forgotton the exact amount.... doh!).

That makes the car quite expensive! - Not really that much of a bagain at all and a hell of a lot of hastle!!

The ONLY way around the TAX is if you live in that country and move permanently to the UK (can put it down as personal goods) - so unless your parents plan on moving back here for good any time soon you will have to pay the FULL amount of tax ( NO way around it.

If you try and dodge it in any way you will pay for it big time!

Hope this helps, and if you do buy it let us know how you got on...?

Unfortunately the guy has now sold it so all this is now a mute point. But to the importation thing, I did it from Guernsey with an M3 EVO, you have to fill out lots of forms, pay 17.5% on what you can convince customs the car is worth (get a valuation from a franchised dealer). Then you need:
An MOT, Certificate of Conformity, conformation from Customs VAT is paid, a V55/5 filled out £25 registration, then pay a years road tax and they give you a reg no. equiv to first reg date.........
