I have seen some guys mention that they have had their cars on a Rolling road . I wonder if anyone has the output characteristics graph, and whether they would mind posting it.

I have a '96 4.2, and I am interested at how and when it delivers its power. I realise that later cars will have different characteristics, and that the 4.5 are different, but any graphs would be of interest.

Thanks in advance!!

Mine was on the RR at John Noble recently - many apologies for the quality of the image, but it came from a camcorder which only does 640x400! Anyway, the key bits which aren't on the image are:

Engine output: 353BHP @ 140MPH/7060rpm (red line)
Wheel output: 257BHP (blue line)
Drag output: 96BHP (green line)
Torque: 295 lbf-ft @ 119MPH/6000rpm (steep red line, with flatter top)

The scales are BHP on the left, lbf-ft on the right, and rpm along the bottom.

That will explain why 4.2's take off when they hit 3000rpm then...

Thanks Futie - that is perfect.

It makes very interesting reading, and explains why the car goes as it does (as Olly says).

Nice one

Thought about putting mine on a RR just for fun really, where abouts is John Noble and would you recommend him?

Cheers

madasahatter - Joolz will organise for yours to go on RR if you speak to him.

Are you going to come to Tankersley by the way? I'll try and be in a better temper than the last time I saw you......

The sharp rise in torque at 3000 is because that's where they start the power run, not because of an engine characteristic. The engines generally misfire a bit at 2000, so they start a bit higher.

That torque peak looks quite high, and although the torque is pretty low power is good for a 4.2!

I'll stick up some pictures of mine pre and post Red Rose mods next week.

rolexblue - it was the first time i'd taken a car on a RR, but i'd certainly recommend Joolz and John Noble - their rolling road is a 4WD one and looks very impressive. They're also planning to upgrade their systems sometime soon I think, so will be even posher.

Hope I didn't confuse anyone with the excessive technical information above ..

rude girl:- I have thought about a RR session, but I don't know whether it is wise, since there is a weakness in the head gaskets in the car at the moment. Joolz (are you about):- Would it be a bad idea?

I would like to make Tankersley, but I am not going to be able to unfortunately - I am sure your temper will be better next time!! (We all have bad days!). Do you think we should have another Warwick "mini-meet"?

Dannylt:- It would be very interesting if you posted your graphs - a 4.5 with RR mods compared to a boggo 4.2. See if you can make the quality worse than futie's though...(Only kidding ).

the coolant leak from yuor head bolt seems to have stopped now steve .. but having said that the rolling road is full throttle for about 30 seconds (don't know where danny got the bit about starting at 3k revs .. we did start higher on his car cos the temp was shooting up and limiting power at high revs) .. other rr tests start at about 1500 revs. I don't think I'd want to risk your engine on the rollers steve - just tell everyone it's 360bhp cos that's what it's quoted at!!

Don't suppose anyone's got any graphs for the Speed Six engine - was thinking bhp rather than reliability before anyone starts

Jon Lewis (B11OCX) has one for his std SP6 .. made 373bhp - more than TVR quote for that engine. Mind you that was on the second engine, don't know what it made on the fourth (!).....
