Are alternators a big problem with 4.2's ?

Over the last couple of days, i've noticed low interior lights and the windows developing a mind of their own. Tested the battery, have found out that the alternator is not charging it when idling.

Does anyone have any ideas on how i can fix this problem ?? or does this mean a new alternator ??

Check the big fuse between the battery and altenator as this is a common problem.

Hmm,

Alternators are really simple things, but the problem with the 4.2 is that you have to take the fuel rails off to get to it.

If it is not charging the battery then I suspect the alternator is at fault (I am guessing you have a multimeter and have tested the voltage across the alternator outputs). There is an alternator fuse which I have heard is fragile as it is susceptible to vibration os check this before replacing the alternator.

Danny has done this before (mine has never gone to my knowledge) so ask him how to do this, or Joolz or WilliamBall or......... you get the picture.

Rob.
