Started to hear a loud ticking noise coming from the engine rather like tappet noise when cold but a bit louder and continuing after the car's warmed up. Doesn't sound good does it? Any ideas?

Dropped it off at Offords today for investigation. Keeping fingers and just about everything else crossed awaiting an outcome.

Snap. My Speed Six has started to do exactly the same thing although it sounds too heavy for tappets i.e camshaft. Vehicle going into MV next week and as with you I've got everything crossed. Given the Speed Six horror stories related on this site I'm not too confident but we'll have to wait and see

Initial feedback from the garage is that a bolt has come loose (probably from one of the tensioners I'm told) and has been rattling around. Don't yet know what damage has been done. Unfortunately it's an engine out, strip and inspect job.

Engine out (and back in) is up to 15 hrs work plus a top end strip I guess. They can always drain the oil and look for any shards to see if obvious damage?
But looks like it is wallet at the ready. Hope you are paying a reasonable hrly rate. Fingers crossed it isnt a rebuild.

The engine is out and based on what they've see I've been told that I am 'the luckiest man alive'. One of the tensioner bolts came free - the noise was from one of the guides as a result of the bolt coming out. The bolt, I'm told, perched itself on a ledge and somehow avoided dropping anywhere where it would otherwise have caused untold damage. There is a washer loose somewhere which has probably ended up in the sump and needs retrieving, but otherwise the loose washer has caused very little damage. Still expecting a big bill, but providing they don't come across any other problems it could have been a lot worse.

I think Team Proactive do rebuilds for just under £2000, that aint bad really.

What do you mean a rebuild for £2000?

Mine has been making similar noises for the last couple of weeks when cold and I know that same sinking feeling - car wouldn't start yesterday morning (well, it was -9degC and I flattened the battery!!) so I checked the hoses etc last night to make sure there was no evidence of ice before I tried to start it again.

As I squeezed the crankcase breather pipe my heart sank - it was crunchy. Not ice but small particles of what I can only describe as grit. Tried the magnet test which was negative but still tells me little, if anything.

Am now debating whether to start the car or ship it to the dealers.

Leszekg,

You've had more luck than me. MV have looked at my Speed Six and diagnosed follower/camshaft wear with top-end rebuild required at factory. Hope to get the car back mid to late January. It's out of warranty at 3 years and a bit and therefore costs are likely to be incurred by myself. There may be a possibility of a goodwill contribution but nevertheless this is grim news I'm afraid !

Regards, Meridian

Why does it take so long to get the engine out then? And back in?

15 hours?
