Strange noises....any ideas??
Discussion
I have a '98 4.2 Cerb, which makes a couple of strange noises. The car is due in for it's annual service next week, but I would like to get an idea of what they could be before it goes in....
The first is when you make a relatively sharp turn on the move and where the camber of the road alters at the same time (eg junctions). There's a sort of groaning/squeaking noise from the rear. I thought it sounded like the boot hinge mechanism groaning as the body flexed, but the hinges are well greased and the bootlid does not make a noise if I move it by hand. Could it be the rear anti-roll bar? I believe that this has been upgraded at some point in the life of the Cerbera, but do not know if my car has the new upgraded version or not. Anyone any idea how much it might cost to have it replaced with the upgraded version? Alternatively, any other ideas what it might be?
The 2nd noise (actually more of a 'sensation' than a noise) is a little more worrying. It's very tight getting the car onto my drive due to the Cerbies restricted turning circle. After a run, I will usually come to a complete halt at the end of the drive, and then slowly edge forward on full righthand lock. As the car starts to move, there's a sort of clunk, and it feels as though the whole car shifts an inch or so (kind of like slipping off of a low kerb). It doesn't do it everytime, but I have mentioned this to the dealer before and they said it was the diff and "they all do that sir". Can anyone confirm this, or does anyone have any different suggestions? Can it be resolved? Strangely my old 400SE did exactly the same thing, and I never got to the bottom of it; (the dealer never could reproduce it when it went in for servicing!!)
Many thanks for any pointers,
Neil

I'll name the second sound in one bob..
Its the rear diff sticking, I assume you have a hydratrack, one of the less desirable but not dangerous / problematic symptoms is exactly what you descride. Its caused by the plates sticking and then the tension building up before they free again.
Ask your dealer to change the diff oil. Sometimes this solves it, if not your stuck with it I'm afraid. Interestingly mine seems to disappear for 3 months or so once the car has been given a good thrashing (track day) so a track day every 3 months is what the doctors ordered.
Faisals got something about it on his page too I think

Could be the ARB mounts, or possibly the exhaust fouling on the chassis members as the engine shifts slightly (I've had this). Does the noise only occur for one direction of turn?

Sounds like the diff and, you've guessed it, TADTS. Don't think there is anything to be done to fix it (or to be worried about).

Hmmmm, there's 2 particular junctions where this always occurs, and they are both right hand turns. Thinking about it, I can't recall any instances where it happens on a left turn.
EMI...but what is an ARB mount?
Cheers.
