Is it true that a 4.5 cerbera is expected to use 1ltr of oil per 1000miles? if so why, this seems really excessive to me and how the hell do you check the oil acurately with that carloss fandango dipstick, get the car cold wipe the dipstick clean refit it retrieve it to inspect level only to find the oil is smeared along its length doh!

You'll get the hang of it - try rotating as you pull it out. Also, sometimes the reverse side of the dipstick is clearer. 1 litre per 1000 miles is the healthy maximum, most cars should be below this. And it depends on how you drive - motorways should use little, track days use more.

Thanks dannyit i will give that a try, i still find it unbelievable that an engine should use that MUCH oil just out of interest how often would you recomend changing the oil, im a mechanical maintenance fitter at FMC by trade but dont work on cars if i can help it but with my turbo i would change the oil every 3-4 thousand miles but being a cerbera and uder warrenty this could be expensive going to a dealer.

Danny's advice on cerbera matters is always spot on, so no need to worry.

However this oil use thing is starting to be an issue for 'normal' cars as well now that service intervals are getting really big. There was something in the news section a little while back about fleet dealers refusing warranty claims on engine failures due to low oil levels and makes interesting reading. Nice to know it is not just on cerbies you have to check the oil regularly
