I test drove two cerbera 4.5's at the week end one was a brand new demo the other a 2000 V-reg. Driving was fantastic although both cars were quite different (used felt better than demo) but both had strong petrol or engine fumes when driving, enough to give me a headache afterwards.

Is there a problem with both these cars?

Only thing I smell in mine is the sweet smell of leather! On the outside OTOH, is the sweet smell of fuel/oil and singed rubber

No, this is a problem in the cars you were in. None of the cerbies I have ever been in had a strong petrol smell in the cabin.

Have owned two 4.5s and neither of them had any petrol smells in the cabin. New ones smell a little of the resin that used in fiberglass, but this tends to go and only leather smell from then on.

I get the odd whiff of super U on the Griff when I'm giving it some, the Cerbera is far more refined (there is a petrol joke in there). As someone else said the only thing I can smell is the leather.

Be careful as my 4.2 Cerbera had a fume smell in the cabin and after about an hour or so I too got a headache.
Since my engine has had some major work i.e. rings valve seals etc the smell has gone. I can only asume the smell was burning oil which somehow found its way into the car.
By the way there was no smoke out of the exhaust as a tell tale sign.

Sounds like it might be wise to give these cars miss. On another point when the clutch was depressed it was in contact with the steering column and when turning the wheel I could feel it through the clutch pedal, is this normal?

You may want to give this particular car a miss. But dont rule out a Cerbera because of one bad one.
Have a good look about and dont rule out a 4.2 the difference on the road is very little if any compared to a 4.5.

After 2.5yrs the car still makes me feel

In my experience, tuscans and cerberas can suffer from very slight fuel leaks somewhere behind the bodywork behind the passenger seat level. I have experienced this problem in a cerbera demo and then in my own tuscan twice. Tell the dealer as it is not normal for these cars.

Dont be put off by the car, as others wont be like that. Having said that, if you had the window down and were giving it wellie, then you will smell some fumes....doh
