Has anyone replaced their temperature sensor wire (long silver curly metal wire going to water pipe at the front of the engine) with a coolant temperature sensor and added a digital gauge to go with it?

Mine is looking particularly worn out so thinking it would be good to renew it and do this at the same time

I believe the correct terminology is capillary temperature sensor and replaced it with a standard coolant temperature sensor like this one

Yes, I have.

It is not as easy as just replacing the temp sensor. I assume you are thinking of the SPA dual gauge replacement. If so then they supply a very high quality sensor with the gauge but to make it fit you need a few adapters and they cause a problem as the sensor ends up out of the direct flow of water and inside the adapters. On mine this meant that the gauge was reading 10 deg lower than the actual water temp.

To get round this I had a call with Tim at ACT and he ordered a production run of replacement stainless steel bottom water manifolds, which is where the sensors fit, and not it reads bang on.

Overall I am much happier knowing that my temperature reading is actually correct and not a general guess as before, I am happy that the rusty old pipe in the engine bay is now shiney and not rusting through and the other upside is the very accurate oil pressure reading with a programable oil pressure warning, I have mine set at 30psi and the whole gauge lights up red if the pressure dips below this rather than a small, dim light in the speedo.

I'm grateful you did this, thanks! I bought one of the replacement manifolds and my Spa gauge reads the same as the software. I also like seeing the temperature going down in 0.1C increments when the fans cut in smile

Sounds like a good thing to do - these?

Yes, although you would need to specify that you needed the pipe with the shorter boss for the Spa temperature sensor that Gruffalo requested
