Hi all.
It seems to be a lot of difference between V8 and S6 top speed.
Why?
On the road, the speed to play with is a LOT anyway....but I'm interested in technical factor that could dictate this difference.
And what is your speed six top speed after all?

Top speed is dominated by power assuming it has enough gearing to get there.

In the 100-200 MPH domain you can estimate a cars top speed with ((BHP/5) + 100) and it'll come out pretty close.

In my 2nd 4.5 Cerb I topped 190 per the speedo. It wasn’t exactly fun and the 911 turbo in front was pulling away.

That is ballsy for sure! thumbup

I only went to 160 in mine, and it felt like it wanted to take off at that speed I thought! hehe

I did 160 in mt S6 on the speedo but the needle was swaying around for some reason, I doubt it was very accurate.

I did 190ish indicated at Bruntingthorpe, before the car had the Joolz treatment. Gps radar thing I had at the time was showing 182, took a photo then hammered on the brakes as I thought the end of the runway/grass was coming up quick.

Car felt OK, didn't feel light on the front end. I

180mph for a 360hp 4.2 v8
160mph for a 350hp 4.0 S6

20mph seems a lot of difference for only 10hp more

As I said, I would like to understand why.

On the road 160mph It's a lot already

TVR pretty much made up the bhp, acceleration and top speed ‘paper’ claims. They marketed the s6 as a softer Cerbera and so a lower speed would align with their messaging. IMHO

Yup, same as some claims of BHP between the models, number of lightweights etc. Marketing biggrin

I found an old post of Al Melling on this YouTube video comments:

https://youtu.be/Eq4qBlv5E4s?si=hCvEh8eZc56LLWah

As you can read, Melling quote the speed six at 310bhp circa.
The 4.2 V8 at 340bhp.

30bhp of difference suits better the difference of speed between the S6 and V8....

That could just be a final drive difference, the S6 might be lower geared or have the same gearing but lower top revs or even it was a theoretical top speed.

My S6 got to 150+on the speedo very easily but TVR were not known for honesty in numbers so it could have been anything.

indicated 200 on a lightly tuned 4.5 past Essen.
Handling and stability far from inspiring at that speed. Been there, done it, never again.

As far as I know gear ratio is the same.
I think that must be not more than 300/400rpm of difference between the two..
But maybe I'm wrong

A lot of cars are 20 or 25 mph per 1000 revs in top so 400 rpm might account for 10mph speed difference and if the v8 can pull top revs but speed six fell short by 500rpm in top you have your 20 mph difference….perhaps?

Just before/after I bought mine, someone posted a pic of 203 on a German autobahn in a 4.5.

Ben Pike posted that 20 + years ago. I recall it was fake.
