17" - wheels, sizes, tires

Hi folks,
this should be a thread for the 17” fraction:

Soon I will exchange my worn 18” for some new 17” wheels (which is the better size for a Cerbera I believe). Unfortunately, there isn’t much selection on the market especially when you need them wider then 7”. When you search you end up with some Japanese (I think they are and that isn’t a bad thing) manufacturers like XXR, Japan Racing, Rota or Bola only.

Actually, I’m thinking about XXR Wheels 527 in 8,25” / +35mm / 235/45-17 in the front and 9,75” / +25mm / 255/40-17 in the rear what a friend drives on a Tuscan. But I’m not sure if that will fit on the Cerbera too. Front could be also 235/40-17 as original on the 17” Cerberas but there are not so many tire choices. 235/45-17 would be much easier.

So at 1st I would like to know from you what wheels you have on your Cerb in which sizes (17” of course but which width, offset and tire size fits on the Cerbera – especially in the rear).

The 2nd question is:
What tires are you using and recommending? I already learned that Toyos are bad and Michelin PS4 are good but what about the others (Dunlop SP Sport Maxx, Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 2, Yokohama Advan Sport V105, Goodyear Eagle F1, Pirelli P Zero Nero GT)? Any experiences?

Probably this could be a useful collection not only for me but for some who might have the same “problem”.
And please - I don’t want to discuss “Why 17 and not 18” – that’s already decided.

I’ve recently fitted my RL7’s with 255/40 x 17 and 225/45 x 17 Pilot Sport 4.

I’ve by no means tested them aggressively as I’ve been running in the fresh engine, however I do like the lighter steering and I don’t have any issues with rubbing on full lock.

I did want Goodyear Eagle F1’s however I could not get a matching set front and rear. The PS4’s meant I got a matching set.

Best road tyres going atm are PS4s followed by Goodyear Assymetric 5's.

You will struggle with that rear wheel/tyre fitment, I am running 9.25" et36 XXRs and it is very tight.

I am looking at buying a second set of 17" wheels to put track tyres on.

Mostly looking at Bola, they have a good reputation and are light and strong. Tyres to go on them are Pilot Cup 2 Contact in 255 all round.

I use Cup 4 in 255 all round for road use, I ended up with 255 on the front when I got a puncture while in France on holiday and 235's were simply not possible to get so in order to keep mobile I ended up with 255's. The fronts rub once in a blue moon on the inside front wing, just enough to show a rub mark but not damaging and only when slow manure ring on full loch on bumpy or uneven ground.

The Michelins are the best tyre I have found by a country mile, grip like poop to a blanket and very good wear rate, you really get what you pay for.

I just went outside to check

I've got 17" x 8" wide Rota wheels all round, fitted with 225/45x17" Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres (also all round). I've run this setup for over 15 years with no issues, though not done track days for many years. The Goodyears seem like a good road tyre with good grip in the wet. As others have said, there are probably better options out there now.

Also just checked. Due to 'chocolate' 18 inch spiders I changed for 17inch TSW wheels from performance alloys in 2017.
Wheel sizes were
Front: 17x8.5 pcd114.3 ET40 with Yoko -S-Drive 235/40 (would not recommend this tyre)
Rear: 17x9.5 pcd114.3 ET40 with Goodyear Eagle F1 255/40 (good tyre)
By comparison with the spiders, the TSW's are much lighter, and strong as (rotary forged' though not quite as strong as fully forged. The look good and come in a variety of colours.
The 235/40 17 size is very limited for choice now. I can match the Goodyears if I go for 245/40 17's the next time.
A great size for reviewing wheel / tyre sizes is willtheyfit.com - sounds dodgy but is pukka information!

Great - thanks so far! Exactly what I wanted and what I think could be useful for others too.
Of course opinions are always subjective but it gives some ideas.

9.25" et36 is tight where - inside or outside? Which tire size do you use there?

Certainly the 255's are fine, I use these all round on mine.

Yes, seem good. I put some photos of them on the Cerb FB group recently, albeit more in relation to how the fronts looked. If you’re on there and search ‘Pilot’ in relation to the PS4’s it should pop up - Antigua Blue

I had 255 all round (as the car came to me with) and it was terrible in my experience. Tramlined terribly, had poor turning circle and obviously heavy to manoeuvre.

They are actually square fit wheels! It's just in the tyres.

Most of the V8s were different front to rear, the speed 6 cars had 225x50x16" all round. Even though mines a V8 I've gone for the same size wheel and tyre all round (225x45x17" on 8" wide rims) and not had any issues.

They are much wider than other tyres of the same size

This picture doesn't show it very well, but the contact patch really is much bigger

I have the same question. I’ve just bought a set of RL7’s and am struggling to find a matching set of tyres to fit as per the recommended sizes ie 235/40/17 front and 255/40/17 rear.
The only tyres that show up on Blackcircles are Yokohama Advan Neova AD08RS which I have no experience of. I probably wouldn’t be doing many track days (if any) so they would be for summer use. How bad would they be if I found myself on a wet road?

I have driven new AD08R though torrential Belgian downpours on the E40 and they are excellent - not a hint of aquaplaning

On track they are wonderfully progressive once they warm up, but I have no experience of the new RS compound

I doubt you will be disappointed
