Hi All
Fans. Gotta love ‘em.
Having driven a healthy 70 miles or so, suddenly hit a major traffic jam. Temp gauge started soaring and as it hit 110 I got edgy and pulled over to let her cool. No signs of life from the twin fans. Doesn’t seem a fuse issue as tested them (setting off a 30 minute midnight fiasco in the process as the alarm went off, doors locked and girlfriend vowed to leave me).
Anyone point to the most probably other cause and how to test it?
Cheers
Have a look at the connectors for the fans. They're a couple of push-fit plugs, and dangling near the base of them, sometimes sitting in a little "tray" along the base of the rad. As you can imagine, they do tend to get a bit wet and the connectors corrode. Unplug them and give them a bit of a clean and see if this makes any difference. I had a problem with one of them, and that was what it was.
If I remember correctly, if you disconnect the temperature sender unit i.e. unplug the connector on the sender unit on the hose, then if you start the car the fans will be on all the time (the MIL warning light will illuminate to indicate a fault condition).
Might give you a clue as to if the sender is faulty/bad connection.

Try and check the relays in the boot along with the fuses.....if you disconect the fans try a direct battery conection to them just to make sure they are working also if you have access to a multi meter check at 95 and 100 C that you are getting and input voltage to the fans.
You can bypass the censors so the fans are permanently on until you get to the dealer (just for paeceof mind) but you will get the MIL light on if you do it.
NSR wheel there is a gap into the under side of the engine bay there is a two wire clip on conector to the cooling/distribution bar remove it (pushing the clip)

I had a strange one recently, not sure if it applies to you as you don't say if the engine was running when you noticed you had no fans. My fans we functioning fine with the engine running but did not stay on when the engine was off (ignition on).
Had the AC regassed and they now come on with just the ignition (if required). I know I'm not imagining it.

It's true that they only come on if the engine is "mobilised" (i.e. beeping/ecu active), rather than just ignition on and still immobilised.
