Steering column pod
Discussion
What a lovely little job-you need to remove the steering wheel, boss, ribbon(note which way off it comes and also be careful as the ribbon is stuuck down and will tear if you just yank it)this will expose the rest of the retaining bolts for the binacle-remove all and away we go-never had to take one off though to remove the indicator stalk....

thanks stuart,
dont need to remove it for the indicator stalk, its just that ive just got my car back from the dealer, and the left indicator is down and the hazard lights do the right turn?! some things amiss so i thought id check the cabling in the pod, its just a bit more difficult than i thought.
cheers

most common problem with indicator stalk going awol is the bolt that it pivots on becoming loose. It runs parallel to the steering column, bolt head towards the footwell, obviously going through the indicator stalk near the steering column. You can get at it from the back of the pod without removing the pod providing you lie upside down in the footwell [seat right back]. It's a real sod, but the bolt cannot be tightened right up as it would lock the stalk, so its not uncommon for it to work loose. It it comes out altogether then its an absolute pain as theres spring tension in the indicator mechanism that makes it really difficult to line back up again. It you're up for the challenge of getting the bolt back in, then the best bet is actually to remove it and put some loctite on it so it doesn't undo again. Beware against overtightening as you will find on days where the car interior heats up the indicator stalk will 'jam', so you have to keep the bolt relatively loose. Anyway, the summary is you can fix the typical indicator woes from the back of the pod with everything in place - it's just a sod to do.

Not old and weak but lying upside down as suggested is a real sod for me.
If I was to fix the flaky stalk whilst sitting on the driver's seat, would it be any easier? After removing the bolts around the TVR logo, do I need to remove the bolts around the instrument pod? Is it easy to put back? Not a mechanic as you can probably gather!

If it's only the pivot bolt that has worked loose, it's quite an easy fix as I managed to refit the pivot bolt without stripping anything down - just pull the hose off of the back of the steering wheel vent to make life easier!
Opened the door, sat down by the side of the car, leant into footwell with torch in mouth, peered up behind steering wheel cowl and started the bolt with my fingers before giving it a final tweak with a nut-driver......
