Any of you Cerbie guru's outthere--
FINALLY (after some 3 months!) got my RR cerb back last friday from it's second head refiddle/engine rebuild or whatever. Did some 300 miles since, everything seems fine. Tonight, starting it to drive home, I think I heard a metallic "ping" from somewhere behind the dash. It was very brief, and as it happened when I put it in gear I'm not sure where it came from. Anyway, nothing seemed wrong and I drove off. After a little while I notice that all lights - headlights, but also all dash lightning - vary in brightness with the revs. This seems to be most explicit at around approx 2000 revs... above that, the modulation becomes so fast it is difficult to see; below that, it is very slow or absent. I'm sure this wasn't there before, it's quite irritating in fact. In addition, I seem to hear a slight graunching noise from the engine bay "in synchronisation" with the light modulation.

Any ideas? something wrong with the alternator maybe? I need the car this friday to drive to Holland, so I do hope it isn't serious...

Thanks for any help.

Could be the alternator fuse that is accessed under the trumpets and behind the engine.

Hmmm mine did this and eventually a warning light came on (the oil light cos tvr wired that one and alternator warning arse about tit). Assuming oil problem i limped home only to find the oil spot on but the alternator belt shredded!. Could it have been damaged or over tightened after the rebuild????
