quarter mile times??
Discussion
my irritating little arsewipe of a nephew keeps telling me his mates super turbo'ed nitrous lowered sprayed japanese RX7 will do the quarter mile in less than 10secs, ( he's been watching fast and furious too much!) has anyone ever done a quarter sprint and what times did they come up with?.... if its good I'll show him....but no way am I going to lose...
You'd be suprised what times you can get in a suped up car. I used to help out at the VWDRC events, helping run a Full Bodied, normally aspirated, 2.5 litre (think 1.8 bored out), running low 12s passes. I've also seen tube chassis cars with beetle engines in do sub 9s passes.
Its all to do with traction, power, and hoping something doesn't go pop. In drag racing, as for many things, you are only as strong as your weakest part.
Usually the launch causes the breakages, either gearbox or clutch. I'm glad the Cerbera suffers from lack of traction, else I'd probably have gone through clutches & gearboxes the way I go 100+ yds wheels spinning - need more practice.
Best I got out of my 4.5 was about 13.1. It will go faster, just got to work out how to launch it better.
Back to the question, its possible, personally wouldn't drive it.
Although I am going to be driving a 70's Porsche (don't flame me!), with a small block chevvy down the strip this year. Should start off doing low 12s, then without Nitros Oxide or Turbos, we should be able to get below 10s quite easily.
The hardest thing is going to be able to keep it as a road car. My friend is 6ft something, and being 5ft 8 myself, I CAN fit in the car with a rollcage and helmet - he can't.
Not sure if he's nervous of making an excuse, but I'd be worried if last time I went down the strip I did 4 360 degree spins across the track, followed by 3 up in the air 360 degree spins.
Car was f**ked, roll cage in tact, drive had a bruise on his rib, and a graze on his arm, not bad considering it was a full body beetle, glass windows, but most excess weight removed, and at just a little over 120 mph, when I saw it I cacked myself.
In hindsight, the worst part of it was running the 1/2 mile + to get to the crash site.

There is a link showing 1/4 mile times, but for the sake of it I can't remember, I think the MacLaren F1 could do 10 second runs but not 9's. Get him to do the whole mile. I figure the Cerb will catch up after the 1/4 and beat it over the mile. It should do a mile in 30 secondsish on a good day.
If you are after speed, get a 20k Cerb and spend a few grand on getting a NoS kit added and bingo, you will munch it for breakfast.

I've commented before that I think the Ferrari 360's claimed performance is well dodgy. Look at the difference between the Ferrari 355 - 1/4 mile in 13s against the 360 - 1/4 mile in 12.3s. That's a big difference considering they almost identical power-to-weight ratios.... I'd like to know what accounts for that 0.7s (which is a lot at this level) - is it all in the F1 gearchange and/or improved traction, or do Ferrari prep their press cars as I suspect?

His 'mate' must be well off to afford all the stuff to get a RX-7 sub 10s. It's possible but I'd take it with a pinch of salt. To see what needs to be done to jap cars to get them that quick check out - www.junauto.co.jp
Talking of quarter miling:
Popped along to watch some drag-racing at North Weald last week, and the scariest things there were 2 Fiat 126s owned by the same bloke, both with Cheyy 350 (5.7) V8s under the front bonnet and stretching into the cockpit.
They looked virtually standard and were road-legal.
Didn't see them running, but the idea was just ridiculous!

Don't know that much about 1/4 mile dragging, but i do know that a fast gear change via a quick shifter can knock off at least 0.5 secound if there are 2 or 3 gear changes involved, as my mate has done back to back testing on the strip with standard and equiped vehicles, this might be why the 360 braggs a faster time, maybe.
