2021 Geneva Motorshow Cancelled
Discussion
Looks like the financial burden of this year’s cancellation and lack of commitment from manufacturers has put the axe into GIMS.
Some uncertainty about whether it will continue beyond, if Palexpo take over. Shame because it was the industry centrepiece and the venue for a lot of important launches, as well as a valuable opportunity for the public to interact with the manufacturers - especially on the Press Days
Be interesting to see how it impacts on Porsche’s new product launches - will it bring dates forward?

I reckon all car shows will grind to a halt. Manufacturers have been forced to test the water with online launches and they seem to have worked. Showrooms will be next as they start to follow the Tesla model.
Yup...so many other shows were being taken off the calendar. Massively expensive to do and ultimately these things are about creating hype/excitement around the product globally not about showing the product to the people that actually attend the show. No need to do it any more. I don’t think the local businesses helped themselves either I remember reading an article saying that hotels, caterers etc were holding exhibitors to their bookings which hadn’t gone down well. Such things are about the “experience”.
It wasn’t an “experience” to go to Palexpo, it was quite frankly little different from flying into Brum Int and then walking across to the NEC.
Villa D’Este, Goodwood, Salon Prive, Pebble Beach etc etc ... are premium “experiences”. Why launch to fat sweaty hacks? You can launch to the select money or influencers or whoever in person, throw the jazzy party, then stream it live.
Everybody wants a piece of the boutique lifestyle.
The world is changing. Adapt or die.

Tragic, what a great show it was. It was an opportunity to entertain car buyers and existing owners. Frankly a Youtube clip, or the sort of wine and canapes do the dealerships tend to put on, aren't much of a substitute. I appreciate that R-R may invite selected customers to Villa D'Este (which I think is over-rated anyway) but very few of us are going to be on that list.
By comparison, you could spend a very nice hour or two in the Porsche suite at Geneva.
Not really interested in Youtubers, after a certain point they are all hot air. I wonder what the manufacturers are planning, if anything, instead?

Err, no, they don't. Most normal folk couldn't think of anything worse than having to sniff the same spoiled-brat, silver-spooned arse licking air as those twonks. Most switched on folk also know the stealerships have been fleecing them for ling enough and couldn't give two monkeys at spending a day looking interested at faux-socially important manufacturer-stand ste-spouters.

Anyway there’s a reason these shows are too expensive to run. These days you need million pound demountable wonder stands serving nouvelle cuisine flambé in front of you. Once upon a time all you needed was a couple of cars, a big sign, a back room with comfy seats and a well stocked fridge for existing customers and a cabinet full of brochures. I’d quite happily go back to that.

Correct - the Porsche stand is a great place where you can get a German beer or a nice riesling, suitably chilled, with some Bratwurst followed by cakes and coffee. I'd just as happily pay for it, and that is about as boutique as I want to get. Most of the stuff in the manufacturer's magazines is just a bit too boutique for its own good, and they need to appreciate, we are interested in the cars, we don't envy or want to lick the arses of sundry male or female models, artistes or people who think they are opinion formers or in some way cool.
