For such an important topic, why hasn't Autocar or any of the major UK motoring news outlets ran this story??

They do have history of being a pro-Remain publication....

"A Nissan spokesman said on Monday: “We deny such a contingency plan exists. We’ve modelled every possible ramification of Brexit and the fact remains that our entire business both in the UK and in Europe is not sustainable in the event of WTO [World Trade Organization] tariffs."

The option or idea proposed in the article to save Sunderland was that "Nissan increase UK market share from 4% to 20% to cover the shortfall of exporting to Europe with a tarrif."

This is referred to as "Blue sky thinking" no limits or boundaries based in reality. These are either when the company in the proverbial or you are into a 3 day bender having consumed your body weight in coke having already agreed you should set up a band.
