This is my concern with ICE in general now, especially when it comes to buying into the current bubble for all things that can be described as ''future classic'' performance cars (mainly 90's-2000's hot hatches and rally reps in my case)

The current bubble prices for these types of cars would be wiped out overnight if the UK gov introduced similar swingeing taxes on them.

The thing is SUVs aren't necessarily that much worse.

I currently drive a V6 petrol 7 seat SUV - it gets about 8.7 l/100km on my commute.

Previously I had a V6 estate with the same engine / trans. They get about 8.2 l/100km on the same usage.

I also ran a 7 seat body on frame 4WD with a 2.8 diesel - it got about 8.2 as well.

I could get a 4cyl hatch that does about 7, but the difference in fuel cost is only about 5 quid a week, so why bother?

The important words in the article are 'revenue for the government'.

Isn't this a tax on first registration? So all the old black smokers will be OK

This is why the French have riots, and we have a Boris.

As 30% of new French cars are SUVs, it looks like they're having one last fling

Sack the Bloomberg article author and the proof-reader!
“The electric-car market won’t take off without strong purchasing incentives,” he said. “Everyone has something to loose: The industry, the environment and the purchasing power of the French.”

To loose...a place in France, or a Frenchman's trousers? Fergoodnesssake rolleyes

So it's not a SUV tax. It's a high emissions tax. Will apply to high performance sports cars too but won't apply to a1.2t 3008 SUV for instance which at 1250kgs returns 40 mpg average and 50mpg on a run.

This is a transition period. At the moment you have over 80% of road users paying fuel and road tax to maintain the roads. The carrot/stick to get people to buy EVs is still being carried off the fat of the old system.
If you have an EV at the moment things are great, low tax, priority parking, cheap electricity charge points and a smug feeling you are helping save the planet like a reformed smoker.
But it isn't paying for itself or the infrastructure it uses.

Hi,

My neighbour has a RAV. He says he is paying £600 VED..

Barbara's car (Hyundai iX20 is about 18 months old ... it has clocked over 2000 miles. .Fuel consumption is irrelevant ... fixed overheads such as VED are very important.

"Man, missing left leg, seeks similar, but missing right leg, to share cost of shoes". Is it time to find a neighbour who works night shift, to share a car?

I'm sure it will come to all ICEs.

They have to force the public to adopt EVs somehow. Most would still rather drive ICEs because it's more convenient and it's what they know. So the way to force EVs in the public will be making owning ICEs prohibitively expensive. If that doesn't work, but it should, they would probably just flat out make ICEs illegal to drive on public roads all together. Then give everybody like 5 years notice. Maybe 3.

At least in the UK and Europe. The U.S doesn't seem in a hurry at all to replace ICEs. Ironic since the company leading the charge, Tesla, is an American company.

It's these new taxes that have killed the fast RenaultSport models.

I suspect they will simply make them deeply unattractive to buy with taxes like this. The bigger problem with ICE becoming a minority pastime will be availability of petrol. There are too many votes to lose in attacking current owner directly. Bashing “rich people buying consumptive cars” is easier.

Let them tax huge French SUVs, no PHer would ever drive an Espace anyway.

I guess before we achieve a totally clean environment with no smoke coming from the streets, there will always be made sacrifices. Looking at the long run, I'm sure these changes will pay off.

Latest news on EVO - UK Government is planning to make owners of high performance cars pay the heavy Road Tax EVERY year, which could mean up to £2135, every year.

Bugger coronavirus - this is serious.

You're living in cloud cuckoo land - go out into the streets - any emissions are coming from trucks and buses, not modern high performance vehicles.

How can this lunacy possibly pay in the long run? They are trying to fund electric vehicle take up from high performance cars. Apart from the fact that they will destroy the British prestige car industry, how long do you think that is going to last? People won't drive these cars, or won't put them on the road. Then who is paying Road Tax?

Got to make up the revenue from electric cars not paying road tax or fuel duty. Drop in revenue is only going to increase so might as well tax folk who have a few quid!

And how does that sort of naive concept usually end up?

Would you pay it? I wouldn't. I won't break the law, but I'm damned if I will calmly accept this.

Wouldn't be surprised if they extend it to used performance cars as well, anything with high CO2's
