I live near the A21, a straight part with dual carriageways. This morning we had someone with an extremely loud exhaust go past our house and up the A21 giving it some, so I could hear him. Same for motorbikes.
However, this tends to be a short period of time only a few times per day, whereas there is a constant drone all day from car tyres. Also we are on the flight path for planes queuing to get to Heathrow.
I believe it is the fact that the bikes and noisy car exhausts have a certain pitch and stand out from the background level which people have got used to.
I have a loud exhaust on my MX5 so of course am a bit biased, however my wife only complains on some days about the noise when the wind is in the direction to make the tyre noise drone worse.
I guess sleepy villages do not get contant tyre noise so the exhausts stand out more.
