Speed cameras

Can anyone help?!
Today I was driving up the M42 from Coventry to Leicestershire and on the other side of the motorway I saw a double camera flash. I checked my speed and I was doing 60 or thereabouts and the variable speed limit was 60. I am now super paranoid it was flashing me even though common sense says not. Can cameras flash people on the other side of the motorway????
